Stripped fuel bowl screw now what?

How do I take out the old screw? There's no room to work a drill in that tiny space!

Dremel with a cutting wheel. Cut a slot in the head. Use a flat head (and a LOT of downward pressure) to get it out. Replace with M4x16 screws.

How do I remove the bowls? I was such an idiot and tried to re-jet without removing the carbs.

There's 4 screws on each bowl. Remove those, and pull the bowls off. You'll have to do the two front center ones to get either bowl off because the bracket for the idle speed adjuster is there. Take the carbs out. Change jets. Replace the screws you stripped.

I thought there were Only 4 screws total, one for each corner.

yepp. 4 screws per carb bowl. 2 carbs. 1 bowl per carb.

That means 8 screws total holding the bowls on

I'm going to hazard a guess that part of the problem here is that you were using American Phillips-head screwdrivers on the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screwheads on the EX-250 carbs.

Trying to use Phillips screwdrivers on JIS screws always ends badly.

If you're not planning to swap out all the screws on your carbs (as @choneofakind suggested at the end of his first post) to prevent further stripping of the OEM screw heads I'd suggest either getting a couple of JIS drivers or go to Home Depot and pick up the small size Drywall driver bit (it's the same profile as a JIS driver and won't strip them out like a Phillips screwdriver will).

Part of the problem is that I didn't have any room to work with. My bike is stock. I also couldn't find an offset ratchet handled screw driver, only the offset screwdrivers that resemble a zig zag shape that look like Allen keys. I managed to get the two outer screws off on the left side of one of the fuel bowls but I stripped the outer right ones. I can't image trying to get the inner ones without taking everything off first, there's absolutely no room with all the hoses going every which way.

a JIS bit is a good idea also.

It will be easier to get jets changed with the carbs off the bike. If you aren't confident in your ability to do that, find a mechanically inclined friend to help. 2 pair of eyes and 2 brains are always better than 1

It's a bummer once the heads get screwed up, but once you get them out of there and your ready for assembly get yourself some stainless steel allen head bolts, and you won't have to worry about having a hard time getting them out again, hit your closest Brafasco they will have what you need
