S1000rr's

One of my buddies has a couple of s1000rr's and I was fortunate that he let me work on them and ride them if I so chose.

So far I've only ridden the 2015 but I'm thoroughly impressed. I've ridden bikes with drive-by-wire before but this thing is incredibly responsive. I feel like it is reading my mind. Super smooth engine and shifts smoothly with the quickshifter at higher RPMs. The transmission leaves a little bit to be desired at low RPM (which is a shame because it has plenty of power all the way down to 4k.) The suspension is very compliant and the brakes are second to none. I think they've done a great job with this bike but I'd like to compare it to a new r1 and rsv4rr.

He purchased a Brembo 19rcs and matching clutch lever for the '15 and installation was easy. No weird issues with the ABS. One cool thing is that the bike doesn't require a brake microswitch because it is built in to the ABS unit. Anyway, here are some photos:

Here is the 2013 s1000rr. It had a wreck... One of the main issues was that every 3rd or 4th pull of the brake lever the front wheel would lock up. It took a hit to the master cylinder and there was air in the ABS module so I'm guessing that's where the problem is.

I find it interesting. Over the years I've worked on some very expensive hardware and most people look at the price of the vehicle and freak out.

After a while the sticker shock wore off for me. I enjoy seeing the different way things are designed and how the system works together.

I just enjoy working on things.

I totally agree, CB. You have much more experience and knowledge than I, but with my limited experience I also enjoy working on machines from different countries. It is amazing how you can often see the larger society displayed in the way they solve engineering problems.

The '13 s1000rr is fixed! and sold! The owner sold it to a guy for track only duty for a song (so jealous)

Turns out the issue was that there was air in the ABS system. I would like to have a GS-911 tool (Factory BMW Software) but I'm not made of money. I did some research and came to the conclusion that one cannot bleed an ABS equipped s1000rr without the factory tool. To clarify... The actual bleeding does not require a tool. It's the same process as any other bike. What you CANNOT do is get air in the actual ABS pump. That's why one would need the scan tool, which is the situation we see here.

SO... I bled the ABS equipped s1000rr without a scan tool. I noticed when you turn the key the bike goes through a systems check, including cycling the ABS pump (which is what the scan tool does during the bleeding process to remove air from the ABS pump)

Ta da!! A little bit of patience later and we have an air free system.

The bike is a beast.

Since it will be leaving I guess this is the end of this post. I should have documented replacing the batteries in the Concours TPMS. I have an FZ1 that needs the emissions stuff removed and the carbs cleaned so I may document that.

^^ That's smarts. Good thinking.

Might wanna keep that on the DL or BMW will do something to thwart that workaround in the future!

The "classic K" BMWs (pre-'84 to mid '90's) with ABS had a bleed nipple on top of each ABS pump: relatively easy to bleed the system.

Newer is usually better... Maybe not always, though.

I love that red and white color scheme. Friend of mine built a new S1000 track bike for a guy. They alternate that and a panigale R at track days. They tell me the bmw pulls a gear higher than the duc.

No, not this year. I think even GR is staying up here this year.

Yeah someone we know was driving by the fire as at had first started, I hear it spread pretty quickly.
