An alternative to removing the snorkel
First of all, I don't have a digi camera so please don't bust me for not posting pictures.
I have shimmed the needles on my GREEN, 09. Removing the snorkel seems to be the next step in DIY modifications for performance. After reading all the posts, it seems that doing this can somes make the engine run lean again and negate the benefit of shimming the needles. If this in fact does happen, reinstalling the snorkel is somewhat difficult. I noticed that on the sidewall of the air box, below where air from the snorkel enters the air box and into the filter, there is a flat surface. So rather than remove the snorkel and to give some ability to tune the intake, I drilled a series of 1/4 holes in this part of the air box. The holes are drilled in line so each line of holes can be covered by a strip of "100 MPH" tape (if you don't know this is ductape on steroids used by the Army to quick fixes on helicopters and lots of other things). Leaving the body panels off, I then took the bike for a test ride and tried various combinations of exposed holes. After finding what worked best, I sealed the other holes with 1/4 plastic plugs and silicone sealant from the hardware store. Not quite as clean as removing the snorkel but it is hidden by the body work and when I do a full jet kit, I can pop out the plugs and tune the intake. I've used this method on my racing scooter and other bikes with good success. |

sorry, silly question, but I have to ask. You didn't happen to also drill a hole on the back side of the filter, right? You seem to know what you're doing, but I just thought I'd ask...
and if the bike's running lean again after removing the snorkel, add more shims, or re-jet, for it = HP! wow, the second time in a week I've posted this. Really, I'm not narcissistic, I promise! http://www.newninja.com/modification...-off-of-it!!!/

Naw, I didn't make that mistake, but good to point out that you must make sure you don't drill into the filter or on the engine side of the filter.
