Question Chain problem??

Hey ninjette forum!
I've been lurking here for a while and recently bought a 2008 ninja 250r! The only thing that I noticed was that the chain was rattling when I rode it around, so I decided to tighten the chain. However, after cleaning/lubing the chain, the problem is still here Anyways, after riding it for about a minute around my neighborhood, my rear wheel locked up and almost made me drop the bike. Is this a chain issue or a sprocket issue?

I took this video of my bike on the rear stand trying to depict what was going on.. You can hear and see that a specific chain link gets 'stuck' and makes a noise when I roll it off the sprocket.

Thanks in advance guys!

EDIT: Heres the video! Sorry!

I'm seeing what looks like rust on your rollers. If a link is getting stuck it probably means its internal workings are shot from the rust. Replace the chain and sprockets.

Chain appears to be toast, so I'd agree with the suggestion to replace both the chain and sprockets. That said, I'm not understanding how it could lock up the rear while riding.

Yeah, I'm not sure about that either. Replace the stuff and do some cautious riding in the neighborhood, see if it happens again. Did you look at the tach when it happened? Are you sure it wasn't just the rear wheel locking up? I'm not sure how a chain can just stop while on two spinning gears and not grenade itself and everything around it...

That link looks faulty, and if the brown coloring on your rollers is rust time for a new chain lol that's pretty bad. Another thing your chain could be too tight as well since you said you just tightened it. Looks like that link doesn't have the space to get where it needs to go and/or is busted and doesn't have any flexibility. Could be a combination of those things.

If you don't want to diagnose it yourself a tire shop will probably look at it for a few bucks. I mean like $10-$15

Time to replace the chain. It may be adjusted too tight also.

Watch this video on correctly adjusting the chain -http://www.canyonchasers.com/video/chain.php

Ouch. Sounds painful. Are you going to do the work yourself or have a shop do it? You need a chain breaker and riveting tool if you DIY ($85).

If you want a recommendation for a chain/sprocket set, I'd go with DID X-ring chain and JT steel sprockets. They'll last a long time if you take care of them.

You can get away with no chain breaker - just use a dremel to cut the chain. Also, you only need a riveting tool if the master link is a rivet. There is also a clip style master link.

If you decide to get a chain breaker/master link riveter, this is a good one: http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-d...ker-66488.html

Much cheaper than the one I bought from a shop, and much heavier too. There are several youtube videos on how to use it.
