Even in the stock format it's good looking.

Controls too far forward, seat too low, unrideable to me. I realize everyone's different, it's just unrideable to me. I suspect the huge front tire doesn't help handling either. "Honey, try this bike, and if you get good at it we can buy you a Harley."

I could dig that. A little more relaxed that a sport bike, but still looks subtle enough that one shouldn't be embarrassed by association with the Harley crowd.

As a rider, I accept there are bikes which present more challenge to perform under demanding conditions... but it is up to the rider to make a bike perform at its capabilities. Don't blame the bike if it's not doing what you want it to do.

2017 Honda Rebel 500 for $6k is a good price point for new riders to get intro to motorcycling (easier on the wallet than HD entry ride). The ergo of the bike seems to target easy maneuverability over top speed performance, which is a sensible priority for new riders. Honda engine reliability would be something to be expected from these bikes.
More bikes on the road; better for the motorcycling community in general.

But the styling is nice, and that is actually morning important than anything else to some people.

My daughter is 5'3" and took the MSF training on a very similar motorcycle. She hated the feet-forward position right from the start. And try to get off the seat to cross railroad tracks with that layout... it's not easy.

However, I was careful to say it's unrideable to me. More power to anyone who likes that style of motorcycle.

I do maintain that maneuverability will suffer because of that oversized but trendy front tire.

Footpegs don't look that far forward to me.

No they don't. Improvement on the old one it looks like. I hate feet forward too, but the problem on this one might be that the seat is so low, my knees might have a pretty severe bend in them. Seat needs to be about 4" higher.

The Rebel, if the price is now around $6K, would somewhat be in competition with the Yamaha Bolt, with 960cc at $8K. Also, the bolt isn't really foot forward either.

Back in the days where I decided to try a cruiser, I had a Yamaha Warrior. It ticked all the boxes I wanted. 1700cc v-twin, fuel injected, full aluminum frame, suspension and brakes derived from the R1 from a few years back, beefy 200/50 rear tire and 100 ft lbs of stump pulling torque. Had some pretty cool bikini and chin fairings from the factory too. The one thing killed that bike or I would still have it: foot forward pegs. And not just a little, we're talking your body is folded into a clamshell and becomes a human parachute on the highway. Bummer, it was really nice:

Personally, I'd spend the something around $5,000 and get a KTM 390 Duke if I wanted a new play-around bike, or $7,000 for a Yamaha FZ-07 if I were going for a sport-touring sort of thing. I don't know how many of you guys have tried the KTM 390 Duke, but it's pretty amazing.

Crappy rear suspension and they keep blowing their head gaskets. Freakin horrible quality control, very unlike KTM. That all goes for the RC390 too.

The SV650 is back for 2017, Heck I would take that over everything in this thread.

I'm not fond of the foot-forward dynamics, either. Other than that, it's pretty. I really like the mostly-sportbike feel of my pre-gen Ninja and I can't see myself going to anything more cruiser-like in the future. I've only been on three bikes: MSF course on a Honda V-star, my Ninja, and an R3 for a test ride and I really like the sportbike feel.

I think that's a good looking stock bike, the modded one is really cool.

My friend has a Boulevard S40 which is the first bike I ever rode (in a parking lot and around the block a couple times) prior to taking the MSF course and subsequently got my Ninja. Anyways, I found that my butt and back would be quite uncomfortable on his bike even after 30 minutes. Perhaps it's just bad posture or the fact that I'm a string bean and have no meat on my butt. I find the Ninja to be more comfortable for me overall but even after 1-2 hours on it I certainly can use a good leg stretch.

To each their own though! I think the price is right and it will be interesting to see how they hold up and sell used.

From what I read, there will be two versions of this bike: 500cc parallel twin and 300cc single. They will be identical, only the engine will differ.
500cc engine is shared with CB500F/X and CBR500, and it is really good.
Could be a fun bike, if you like cruisers.

I just don't like the feet forward position of most cruisers. I'm definately a sport bike rider. If I was ever in the market for a newer cruiser though..., the new 16-17 Victory Octane definately has my attention. Just not now at $10k...I'll probably wait 5-10 years and buy one on the used market.

AFAIK, the new Rebel line is marketed towards beginner riders, low seat height, easy to ride, upright riding position.. DCT would be a nice option for those who just want to twist-n-go, not have to worry about stalling.

Knowing Honda, it would likely be an expensive option.
Same CB500F/Rebel 500 engine:

I like that one way better! Needs more tail and less headlight guard though.

I have the Duke 390. She's more of a first race bike than anything else. She wants to rev, and to race. Riding timidly in traffic is not its territory. Nor are long rides. Now, I had the CB500F, which uses same engine as Rebel 500. That bike was so boring, it could put you to sleep. KTM is a lot more fun, but not as practical.

Looks like they made a nice-looking bike of the CB500R for the '17
