Anyway, yeah I kind of forgot, HI has a sort of "rainy season" don't you?

hey joe don't let the scottoiler keep you from inspecting your bike. its great to not have to put the bike on a stand and lube the chain but regular inspection and maintenance is a requirement and the bike really demands a lot more attention than a standard vehicle like a commuter car. before every ride you should inspect the entire bikes' critical components. things happen, and they can happen slowly on a motorcycle. inspecting before each ride could mean the difference between getting stuck somewhere waiting on a chain link or some bolt, or getting stuck in a ditch somewhere with a broken leg because the bike failed on the road and caused a crash which threw you down the mountain.... just something to think about.

always inspect your bike at every chance you get.

Yeah, Nov-Feb possibly March is the "winter/rainy season" It rains everyday most of the day if not the whole thing. I was able to get some riding in yesterday. During the not rainy season it still will rain at least once a day. It's more of a mist really. Like at amusement parks to cool off. Kind of convenient actually, when it's super hot. A quick cool down. Last year it rained everyday all day in Nov and we had major flooding.

Don't worry. I'm not one to buy into the whole "set it and forget it" mentality! I'll admit I don't check it everyday... but if I'm actually going out to ride and it's not just to go the 5 minutes to work or to the store I look everything over! Otherwise So far I've done like every other day! But then again, it's still in the new process so right now I look at it every chance I get! But I'll try to keep it in good habit!

Thanks for the advice Alex! I'm always looking for tips and just general advice. Even if you're telling me I've been an utter pillock and need to do it completely different! You guys (well most of you) know more than me! I'm over that stage in my life where I know everything, so if I get advice from someone that knows more, I at least try it out!

Like I never really thought about foot positioning until that thread popped up today. They don't cover that in MSF and none of the people I know personally that ride have ever mentioned keeping the balls of your feet on the rest and moving them only when you actually have to shift and break! I did that my whole (very wet) ride today, and the bike just felt better!

So I had a realization today as I was driving (yes driving ) to work tonight. I feel safer on a bike than I do in a car.

Maybe it comes from being in car my whole life, so it's all very comfortable. I get in, turn it on, blast the music and just kind of mindlessly drive to wherever it is I'm going. I don't think about it, it's just kind of a muscle memory kind of thing...

But on the bike, everything is a danger. So I'm constantly alert, checking everything. Looking at every car, making sure the lady on the phone that's late for her kids because she couldn't stop shopping 5 minutes earlier, sees me. Looking for escape routes. Constantly scanning the road to see which lane of travel I need to be in, and making sure there isn't anything of hazard on the road.

So because of all that, I actually feel safer. If that lady that's on the phone does pull out in front of me, it's okay, because I expected her to do it. I've already braked (if there is no one behind me) or swerved around her before she even realized she almost killed me.

I've always used all of those things on people that told me "motorcycles are so dangerous" but I never actually knew them to be fact for myself. It was all just heresy.

Don't take this as me being cocky or comfortable either. I'm not either of those things, by a long shot. If I ever become "comfortable" on my bike, I will sell it the next day. That's how you die.

Note if you stay on the balls of your feet longer than a few minutes they will start going numb. If you do this repeatedly they stay numb. For a few weeks. Keep everything moving, don't just stay in one spot

I noticed the weird numb sensation so I just started moving them a bit. It helped. But I do so much city riding at the moment I don't get a chance to actually keep my feet still long anyway!

I kind of hope I don't... I know it sounds weird. But when I drive, I usually do it to relax. I relax on the bike too, but it's a different kind of relaxation.

I like the mindlessness of being in the car. I've never driven "good cars" or cars that are supposed to go fast. So besides the occasional "let's see how fast we can go around these corners without wrecking and dying", there isn't a giant need to be alert. Plus because I drive/drove so much. There aren't many roads around me that I don't know fairly well. Which has helped me tremendously on the bike.

That's not to say I didn't break some habits once i learned to ride. I don't tailgate as much anymore, and ever since my MSF I keep my head up more and actually look further into the road. It's weird how I never noticed how near-sighted my driving was until after driving home from my MSF. Since that's one of the things they drill into your head "keep you head up! Eyes up! Chin up!" I got in the car and was like wow... I really wasn't seeing much before!

Will do! I'm glad to be learning all of this as a new rider. I don't have any habits yet, so hopefully with the help of all of you guys, most of my habits will be good!

And thats sad You should sell yourself to fix the bikes It's worth a few ugly chicks and STIs!

I've always been a fan of the Subbies myself Even though the EVO's are better than them now...

haha we're not talking real ladies here! We're talking desperate, cracked out, no braincells left, chicks!

Just do quantity over quality! 40 bucks a session isn't too steep lol 3 ladies a night, 7 days a week....

840 bucks a week, 3,360 a month and 40,320 a year!

lol I just looked it up... because I can... and yeah that sounds very low. I actually have a friend that used to sleep with housewives for money. He got anything from 500-1000 dollars a session.

These are just older women that don't get anything from their husbands because they're usually off on business trips...

Some of me kind of thought this was just a weird problem you had. But i took your word for it and tried to keep them moving. Wouldn't you know it, got home from my ride today, and admittedly on the ride home I didn't move around much. Wouldn't you know it, numb toe for 3 hours! lol

On good habit you need to develope.... check your six constantly at a stop light or sign. Never. ever forget... rearended can really ruin your day. It happens all the time in Cages... and it devastating on a bike. Always move to the edge of the lane. Lane split if it's allowed (hell, even if it's not)

Never, ever charged for it... not to say that I didn't have some ladies grace me with some fairly lavish presents. The one thing I didn't want was an employer/employee relationship in the bedroom.... (or the bakc seat, or the parking lot, or where ever it was we was getting it on...

So night riding, how do you guys and girls feel about it? I think I may have just found a new love.

I haven't ridden in the last 2 days because of work (Was running late for work both days and didn't take the bike there either.) so I've been going a bit nuts. So tonight I said screw it, I need gas and I want to go for a ride.

Something about riding at night is just awesome. It takes an extra amount of concentration, focus and alertness that I find is actually quite enjoyable.

That's how I feel. Even though it's winter... but it was fairly warm tonight!

I always loved random night car rides, so this really shouldn't surprise me as much as it does.

I guess it's all about just taking it easy, enjoying everything around you and just having fun.

Which is one of the reasons I didn't ride to work the other day. I've been doing it because I had to with my car not working. And although I didn't experience it yet, I didn't want to start loathing riding the bike because I associated it with work. Plus with the cold temps, it's sometimes hard to find the fun in freezing.

So with the itch to ride tonight, it made everything 1000% more fun. Which is a lot because I still have fun riding in 20 degree weather! haha

I always loved random night car rides, so this really shouldn't surprise me as much as it does.

people at work think i'm crazy for riding in the cold and rain, but they really just don't know how enjoyable it is. most people will never understand, unless they do it.

riding is truly one of three activities, where my mind is a state of heightened awareness...

O wow! That's odd! I've never met anyone that really even knew of the MT. Joy/Marietta/Maytown area! haha If you ever end up in this terribly small town of MJ, let me know! I'll be down to ride! haha

Sadly I don't think I'll be able to make it up to Lake George this year, as I'm hoping to be starting a new job in the near future! But this does sound extremely fun, I think I'll try to make it next year. Though my mom may be a bit pissed, Lake George was her favorite place to vacation and camp as a child! haha

That being said, you let me know when you're going to be up my way ahead of time and I'll definitely be up for a ride!

Were you at americade last year? Last year was the first time i went, had a blast. Should be there again this year as well. I didnt see many 250's there, i did see someone with a black 250 on a trailer, and i followed another guy with a red one for a bit. Im trying to figure out a way to do americade and then straight to laconia.
