Finally! I got my ninja!!

Behold, my beautiful new (to me) Ninja 250r.

2011 white limited edition with 1,089 miles. A good deal, I think, at $2800.

The only thing is that when idle, I've noticed it runs at about 3500 rpm. Does this mean I have to clean out the carbs or something?

Nice bike

You could try adjusting the idle first.

I love the white SE! It was my only regret when I bought a 2010 red.

As for idle, does it continuously run at 3.5k idle or just when warming up? Is that with choke or not? Adjusting the idle screw is your best bet if it's running like that 24/7 with the choke off.

Ok, I will try and see if it's high at all times, and adjust the idle screw tomorrow. I literally just rode it home!

No... That one was nice but my wife was super paranoid about it because the guy told us it had been crashed and he was repairing it. I trusted him but she didn't like it.

I saw this one, practically new, for the same price, so I went with it to keep the peace.

Not yet. I will look at it later today. To do that, I need to remove both side fairings and puncture the idle screw caps first, right? I saw a great write-up about it somewhere around here. Seems complicated??

Not sure how to do it on the new gen 250's.....but on my pre gen 250 it's just a plastic knob/screw on the left side of the carb. You don't have to remove anything to adjust it. Just turn it one way to up the idle, the other way to lower it. I've done it MANY times sitting on the bike at a red light.

Edit: I can't hear what he's saying because I'm at the library... but here's a video that show's that knob you want to adjust. Looks the same as my pregen. If I remember correctly rolling it toward the handle bars will increase the idle, and the opposite way decreases the idle. If not it's the other way around, not complicated at all. Good Luck!

Wow, that is awesome thanks! I didn't ride it to work today because I want to register it first, this evening. But I will definitely try that when I get home.

Thanks again.

Are you sure you aren't riding with the choke on? Pretty sure choke on means the bike idles at 3500 rpms

I do have the choke on for the first few min of riding, and then once I figure it's warmed up I will close it completely.

But truth be told, I've only ridden it twice. One test ride that lasted about 3 minutes and then a 25 minute ride home.

Unless it's really cold outside, turn the choke off as soon as the bike starts moving

So I fooled with the bike a bit, and you're right, that idle screw is super easy!

I'm idling now at 1,500 rpm. Is that ok?

That's perfect.
I've tried 1300 a few times but it tends to bog off the line if you don't rise the R's prior to dropping the clutch, I always end up back at 1500.

Thanks.

Also, one of the headlights is out unless I put it in high beam. Are those easy to replace?

It's supposed to be like that. Doesn't make sense, I know.. But only one light will be on unless you have the high beams on.. Then They'll both be on

theres a little nob thats hanging down just inside the fairing that can be accessed through the little cutout i believe on the left side. Cant remember which way to turn it but adjust that a little bit, and turn on the bike till you find an idle that works for you.

for pure sexyness, id recommend getting a headlamp cover.

yeah theres a number of bikes that are just like that, with one light on and the other off.

If you see any with both on chances are they're rockin the high beams or have done some sorta mods.

Not sure if this is true, but I was told once they make it like that so someone doesn't mistake you as a car far off in the distance when in actuality you're not far away.

I think there's a mod you can do so they both stay on but you'll have to be handy with electrical things. I ride in the day with my high beams on,, you should too! Next time you pull up to something reflective ( a stopped car, a building with widows etc) toggle between high and low beam. You'll see what a difference it makes for visibility to others even in daylight. On my pregen it makes a huge visibility difference.

Ugh, got a problem, folks.

I fired up the Ninja today for my commute to work, and the thing keeps shutting off when I try to take off in 1st gear! Even after warming it up for 20 minutes!!

Not to mention it's not even cold outside. I'm in NM, and it was already a good 70 degrees at least.

The seller says he will give me my money back if I want. I don't know what it could be. I played with the idle screw, got it revving up to 2k at idle, and still won't go.

Such a hassle.

And I did notice a crack around each turn signal on both sides' fairings. He says it was never dropped, but how else would they get there?

You put te kickstand up.....right? The bike will shut itself off if you try to take off and the kickstand is down

The cracks could happen from things banging into the side of the bike.

Lol yes the kickstand was up. Would this be caused by gummed up carbs?

I'm not an expert but I don't think so. Does it idle steady or do the rpms jump around?

Since you had it running for 20minutes, and as soon as you try to ride it it shuts off, I think it has to do with the kickstand switch. It's a little button that pushes in and out right at the kickstand.. The kickstand activates this, it's a safety switch that will shut the bike off if you try to take off and te kickstand is down.

Sorry, that's my only idea. Hopefully it's just something simple and someone else here can chime in.

Are you able to rev it when it's parked? Try this rev it to like 3 or 4k and SLOWLY let the clutch out. If you're able to rev it up I don't see why it would shut off web you try to leave...unless its that safety switch.

Try making a post in the "tech talk" section of these forums and I'm sure you'll get more responses and faster than here in this thread.

If the motor dies as soon as you shift it from neutral then its the kickstand switch. Even if the stand is up the switch could still be the problem. I'd this isn't whats happening, post a quick little video or a more detailed description of the problem and we'll find the problem for you. It's going to be something simple 99% of the time.

Here, I took a pic of the switch on my bike with the kickstand up:

I suppose it's possible the switch might be bad or maybe it's really gunked up and the button won't pop back out. It is at the bottom of the bike so i suppose that's possible.

The switch is there so this doesn't happen:

I don't think it's the switch. I put the kickstand up, shift into 1st, and it still runs. I let the clutch out a little and it starts winding down. If I give it some gas it just dies.

This also happens if I give it gas while in neutral with the kickstand either down or up. Without shifting, I will twist the throttle and it dies.

A couple of times it will go fine for about 10 feet and then it dies!

The guy said I'm going to get my money back of I bring it back today. I think I will just do that.

Ugh.

That's exactly how the switch works on my bike. A few times i forgot to put the kickstand up, start bike, shift to first, and slowly let out clutch the bike dies. Don't have an answer to the other symptoms in your post....Wish you wouldn't have to return it but that's what you feel is best then do it. Nice of him to take it back. Maybe before you make the exchange he can try to diagnose it since he did own and ride it.. Maybe it's just something silly you're overlooking.

Yes I'm going to see if he can figure it out first. I hate to take it back since its such a nice bike.

The only thing I can think of is maybe he let it sit for a long time and stuff got guncked up or something. But I will take a look at the switch as well when I get home.
