Either that or using the kickstart, .....but those were usually removed, ...... no electric starters for small cc's engines back then. Not only that: racers streamlined themselves laying flat on their stomachs between curves when the bikes were naked. Note how they did stand up the upper body for aerodynamic drag during braking and setting entry speed (brakes were weak and used to become less effective with heat). Those helmets were made of thick fiberglass and leather for the lower part. I wore those things and they were noisy and heavy.

Hernan, Great stuff!! It brings me back to my earliest days of motorcycling and following the exploits of the great ones of that era: Hailwood, Agostini, Read, Ivy, Redman, Gould, Saarinen ... It was a very dangerous era with many not surving their time on the track .

Quad shoe brake
The pictures of Ago on the MV with Quad leading shoe brakes brings some memories. I built a CB-350 cafe racer in '72. The shop I worked at had a whole warehouse full of scrap bikes from the 50's and 60's, and boss was happy for the employees to get ride of parts if they uesed then on their own bikes.
I found a quad shoe front wheel from a Guzzi? and used it. It was powerful. The tire would skid before the bike could stoppie because I had Yokahama tires that really sucked. The brake worked great, they are tempermental and hard to keep in adjustment, but when they are right, they are good.
