whoa just learned that for motorcycles, you're required to have at least 1 mirror by law, and that turn signals aren't required for our state. pretty interesting.

wait so does that mean we can do flush mounts? i mean, since its not required for us to even have turn signals.. lol.

When we did safety inspections at South Seas, one mirror was required (per state law). As for not having turn signals.. I'm not sure about that. But flushmounts are usually a fail, since they're usually not DOT. I'm fairly certain turn signals are required. Call a safety inspection place and verify. South Seas does it, I don't think Cycle City does it anymore, Montgomery Motors I think does it.

Aloha!

I've wanted a motorcycle pretty much my whole life... and now i FINALLY own one!!!

I just bought a Ninja 250 3 days ago, and have been getting my skills up after work in parking lots and such. I also started the MSF course last night, and have the rest to do this weekend. I can't wait to get on the roads and ride! I've driven stick my whole life, ridden bikes a few times, and have owned a moped with a 108cc stroker engine in it for 5 months (upgraded from 49cc), and so far riding the bike has come naturally to me. I've also watched Twist of the Wrist Vol2 twice, and have a few books I'm reading. In addition, I have full riding gear to try and be as safe as I can. I look forward to talking to you guys!

Here are some initial pics

So, I'm not really able to go on a group ride just yet, but I will be soon! I'll keep an eye on this thread and when I feel up to it, I'll let you guys know. I'm really looking forward to meeting you guys (and the ladies) and going on some awesome rides! I've only been here 5mo, so there's a lot of the island I haven't seen yet.

Nice welcome to the island and forums. Good choice for your first bike, she is a fun bike and forgiving bike so great to start on. Are those your base decals? Ride safely, we have been having way too many accidents lately. Looking forward to riding with you :] If you need anything or help dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks! Yeah, those are DoD stickers, but they're from the guy who sold it to me (retired). I need to get those off eventually.

Looks like the bike is leaking something in those driveway pictures?

It looks to be pretty clean cosmetically, looks great.

Damn these carbs. So finicky. Running way lean with 38s, thinking 42s would solve it, turns out it's way rich with those -.-

Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to spend a total of about 30 minutes removing and putting them on. Also the stupid float bowl gaskets are a bitch because they swell from the gas, so I have to let them sit to shrink, but if they sit too long, they'll shrink too much and I'll have to use superglue.

With 40s I THINK that'll fix everything. If not I'll just cry and go back to the stock airbox.

Probably around $300. Or whatever the cost of the shims are if you do it yourself.

I was down riding through on the h1 to wikiki to chill with my friend's family that was in town, but it was me and Jeff (R1), we ran into 2 other riders when we got on the H1 but I dont think anywhere 250's they looked like 600's but I just got a glimpse they were too slow

Thanks for all the warm replies everyone! I just passed the MSF yesterday with a 94% on my practical and 100% on my book test, so I'm a fully licensed motorcycle rider now! To celebrate, I went fro a few rides up and down Kalanianaole... it was a blast! Every motorcycle rider i passed gave me some sort of shaka, nod, etc. It felt great! I love being a part of the community.

I'm not sure what you mean. Ward Centers? Like, you can go for a ride during lunch or something?

Yeah, my MSF instructor mentioned that. PLEASE let me know if it does get opened up to civvies; I would absolutely LOVE to be able to do that.

That spot is actually from the guy's car. The bike doesn't drip at all. It seems to be in pretty much perfect shape, except the throttle/idle sticks sometimes. I've got it pretty much fixed by having the idle way low, i just have to run it with the choke until it warms up, otherwise it stalls. I've read that this is actually a common problem with the ninja 250s.

We do group rides but haven't done one recently. We should def. do one soon since there are so much new members to the Oahu section.

@sirrealist: No, I dont ride on my lunch. no time for it. I work there so you will see my bike there almost everyday
@zion757, @Bushido: Welcome to the forum. stay tuned for future group rides. feel free to browse around outside of the Oahu thread for your learning pleasures.

So... I figured out why I couldn't tune my carbs. My points (basically a mechanical [old] CDI box, click the word for a wikipedia entry on it) were SO out of spec that I'm surprised it even ran. They were so out of whack that when they were supposed to be fully open (about .015"), they were BARELY open (couldn't even get a .001" feeler gauge in there).

I adjusted them to spec, and WOW it runs so much better. That almost completely got rid of the huge hesitation when opening the throttle (it's still there because my primary chain is out of spec). My carbs would be as perfectly tuned as they can be with my velocity stacks, except the main jet is one size too large Gonna crack em open tonight and change it out, and I should be done.

So yeah, I'm definitely up for a ride soon. Still waiting on my brake adjuster bolt though, so it squeaks real bad
