Painting rims...?!

I just wanted to get some info about "powder coating" what is this?
Do people get shops to paint there rims or is there an easy DIY way?
Would you have to tape off the surrounding area or take the rims off?

Powdercoating involves completely stripping it to bare metal, electrostatically applying a thin coat of plastic powder, then melting it in a special oven at around 450°F to fuse the plastic to the metal. All bearings and parts have to be removed because of the curing heat. Threaded holes are plugged with special high-temperature silicone plugs and tape.

Powdercoat will not stick to paint, old powdercoat, etc. Anything that melts or is damage by heat can't be powdercoated.

Most of the cost of powdercoating is the labor to strip the old finish off.

A cheaper and easier way of adding color to your rims is by painting them yourself using the rattle can method. Here is a thread on how I did mine. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=45757

HIGHLY recc. pcing if you want to customize your wheels. the finish is flawless, and very, very durable (no damage during tire changes). yes, it costs more than a rattle can job, but the results are well worth it in my opinion.

How much should powdercoating a set of wheels cost, and how would you go about sourcing a reputable shop to do it?
