Who actually rides with a BELL ?> Poll?

Is anyone interested in polling how many people actually ride with a bell?

I thought you meant Bell helmets as well. Which I like, but they don't fit my head shape so I can't wear them.

But I guess you meant a riding bell like the ones people hang from their frames and stuff. No, I don't use one. I don't believe in superstitions like that.

I used to have one (not that I believe that it does anything), but it fell off. I received another for Christmas last year but it just sits on my desk now.

A friend from my MSF class sent me one. I managed to lose it before it ever made it on the bike. So, I would vote 'no.'

Well, if we're talking the charm...

Have one my Mom gave me hanging on the left side. Have one Teri gave me hanging on the right side.

Makes a funny little ding when I knock them with my heel.

Good lord this is ufcking hilarious.

I very much need to get myself one of these. I know exactly what you're talking about --- the very polite sounding "duh-ding" rotary thumb switch bell on bicycle handlebars... The sound you hear when walking through a nice neighborhood and someone politely dings the bell to warn you that you are approaching from behind.

Or more simply, the "GTFO OF MY WAY, BITCH!" bell.

As for the superstition -- I think that was invented by someone trying to turn a profit and sell a product. Seems like it's working.

As for bells, my star carbon viper has been holding up quite well for quite some time. It just gets a little smelly and I have to take all the pads out and clean them on the regular.

THE LEGEND OF THE BELL*

As we all know, life has many mysteries that have no apparent solutions. One of these is Evil Road Spirits. They are little gremlins that live on your bike. They love to ride. They're also responsiblefor most of your bike's problems. Sometimes your turn signals refuse to work, or the battery goes dead.

Road Spirits can't live in the presence of a bell. They get trapped in the hallow of the bell. Among other things, their hearing is supersensitive. The constant ring of the bell and the confined space drives them insane. They lose their grip and eventually fall to the roadway. (Have you ever wondered how potholes are formed?) The bell has served its purpose.

If you have picked up a bell of your own, the magic will work. But if your bell was given to you, the power has been doubled, and you know that somewhere you have a special friend helping to look after you.

So, if you have a friend that doesn't have a bell, why not be the person to give them one? It's a nice feeling for the recipient to know you personally cared. The, plus a good preventive maintenance program by the bike's owner, will help eliminate the Evil Road Spirits.

here's a good bunch of em. http://www.gofarmag.com/2014/april-2...-superstitions

green bikes were famously terrible luck in racing until kawi took the color. even still most people don't want it because of the old bad luck.

we all know it's bullshit. but why not? being a bit superstitious isn't that bad if it doesn't cause any harm, right?

My girlfriend bought me one. A loved one's gift doubles the power of the bell, so I won't complain. It's got a heart on it, and has a lovely, tarnished-silver patina.

Permanently affixed to my helmet lock!

Works for me.

A friend gave me a bell a few years ago. I think it's in our kitchen junk drawer. And we've had good luck in our kitchen. (Except for the water leak in our refrigerator's ice maker...).

What's brown and sounds like a bell? Dung.

^^^ That is the exact same bullisht I read on the package of a tiny little bell made for 0.0092 cents production cost and shipped stateside from china for sale on the counter for $44.95 at the local harley shop when I was forced to buy fork oil locally because it isn't the kind of thing you can order online via air-freight.

Smells like good business to me. Maybe I should start building tiny bells in my machine shop on my lathe and trying to sell them on a stand at the side of the road. Oh wait, someone else is already doing that, and they have access to cheaper chinese bell production facilities than I do. And they probably have a better advertising campaign backend because I'm not sure I could come up with a story that clever and actually peddle a product that shady without feeling morally unsound.

Quote:
Attention Please; Everyone. Yes, everyone --- look this way PLEASE.
It has been my understanding thus far in my existence that the "bell" was originally introduced as a safety precaution to warn under-skilled motorcycle riders when they were getting a little too enthusiastic with their riding and about to drag "hard-parts" on the tarmac; resulting in a motorcycle accident.

The "bell" was originally introduced back in 1817 when the bicycle became popular in Germany. Yes, germany. Very innovative country.

It was not until the late 1860's that the bicycle gained popularity in surrounding countries (France).

Anyways, back on topic. The french were a very polite people and they were the first to originate the concept of a noisemaking device on an otherwise silent human-operated vehicle.

Long story short, 100 years passed, and the time was 1960. As wikipedia tells us, the motorcycle was invented in the first half of the 19th century, but not perfected until later on in time.

Now we find ourselves in present day modern society in which motorcycles are commercially available and quite cheap to afford. Yet, no matter how well a motorcycle is designed, and how well it is produced by a company, it will still be ridden by an occasional and complete moron. It is for this reason that bells still exist.

If none of this was clear... I'm going to try and cliffnote my wall of text.

cliffnotes
-bells make noise.
-noise alerts our attention.
-it's easy to get distracted from the important things.
-crashing your motorcycle is a very important thing which you should try not to do.
-if you hang some noisy siht on your bike footpegs, you might not crash.
-if you hang my bell on your footpeg, you KNOW when bike might about crash down.
-the reason is because if you buy my bell, hang on footpeg, you never crash again.

I promise we have warranty.

We have a lot to learn from the chinese. A lot common sense. Maybe common sense we say, not. so. common.

Can anyone define a farkle? Something we enjoy buying and installing -- yet giving us no realized gains nor performing any specified task properly. Let's all have a group hug and ride safe.

Unrelated but this reminded me...

When digging through my Icon vest, I felt something hard in one of the pockets. I discovered an oval medallion with Saint Christopher on it. Turns out, Icon sews these little charms into their gear since he's the patron saint of travelers.

For the believers, a little protection charm
For the non-believers, a little sign that Icon wishes you a safe ride.

Unintrusive to keep in, a simple cut to remove. I left mine in for the heck of it.

My ridercoach gave everyone a Sierra Pacific bottle-opener for whatever reason (Yeah, I don't know...) I stuck it on my bike as a good luck charm.

I mean, bottle openers are pointless; ANYTHING is a bottle opener if you try hard enough. You don't need a dedicated tool for it. So here's to hoping that weird pagan gypsy beliefs like good luck charms are real, and that my bottle opener is one.

nah it's a bullshit waste of money but if someone bought one for me I'd put it on my bike because it would remind me that people think of me (and therefore I should ride safely so they don't have to grieve) more than anything.
but yeah I don't believe if ghosts, holy or otherwise. If you need a bell to keep you safe, you probably shouldn't ride.
