AMA Pro Racing Superbike series, Auto Club Speedway Fontana Sunday – Tommy Hayden gets his first!

Sunday's races at the AMA Pro Superbike series at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana CA show a first-time superbike winner!Elder Hayden brother Tommy Hayden has been trying to get his first AMA Superbike win for 14 years. He’s been oh-so-close countless times, but luck has always conspired against him in one way or another. That 800-pound gorilla was finally lifted off his back on Sunday, as Hayden rode his Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki to well-earned victory in the American Superbike class at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. It wasn’t an easy win by any means; Hayden had to work his way toward the front during the race, finally taking the lead for good from Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes with a few laps left. Hayden’s teammate Blake Young was running with the lead group, but several mistakes blunted his charge; he recovered to pressure Hayes for second, coming up 0.641 seconds short at the line. In Daytona SportBike action, Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin scored his second victory of the season by stalking Geico Powersports/RMR Suzuki’s Danny Eslick and then timing his draft pass perfectly to win by 0.028 seconds. Latus Motors Racing Ducati’s Steve Rapp was part of the lead group (that was as large as seven at one point) before falling back to finish third a shade over two seconds behind the battling Herrin and Eslick. Saturday’s winner, Martin Cardenas, was also part of the lead pack, but unfortunately crashed on the last corner on lap 13.
