[visordown.com] - Company fined just £180,000 after biker paralysed

A COMPANY who failed to proper mark road works, has been fined after a biker was left paralysed after colliding with traffic signs.

Glynn Turner, 47, a father of three from Ipswich, was riding his motorcycle south on the A12, a 50mph limit road on the evening of 7 June 2010 when he collided with the traffic signs at a road closure.

Mr. Turner sustained multiple injuries and is now unable to move any part of his body, is unable to communicate and requires 24-hour care and has no prospect of recovery.

Ipswich Crown Court heard that 'Road Closed' signs should have been placed by Carillion AM Government Ltd up to one kilometre in advance with further signs at 800m, 400m and 200m. However, just one sign was placed 175m from the closed road, the place where Mr. Turner's accident occured.

Carillion AM Government Ltd, of Birch Street, Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company was fined a total of £180,000 and ordered to pay £28,551 in costs.
