Why would a MTB mono shock be so heavily sprung?
I was looking for mono shocks to install on my motorcycle trailer projects, when I came across this. How can this be?
Description: Suit for electric scooters and bikes. Bumper Spring design Shock Absorber. Made of strong metal material. Please make sure that the spring nut has been against the spring before riding. If you think about the lengths of the links in rear suspension, the amount of movement of the wheel is X times larger than the distance that the shock compresses, effectively lowering that ratio for the whole linkage system. It's really not specific to bicycles and is just one giant linkage analysis problem from a mechanical design textbook.
That said, those shocks look like junk that come on Walmart bikes. They're weird sizes. |

Junk shock, that's why. Have you ever tried to compress the rear suspension on a cheap MTB? It doesn't even move, a rigid might actually be a smoother ride.

No, usually the back end on a junk bike moves, but has no damping. So every time it compresses, it rebounds and compresses and rebounds and compresses, etc. It just pogo's all the time.
Shocks get pricey because of damping circuits and adjustability and serviceability. |
