i drive a two lane road everyday as a part of my commute.
if this happened to me ill most likely have to swerve close to the edge, and hope the cager goes back into his lane. there is no shoulder for the cager to evade into... |

Wow I am completely not surprised the guy was driving a civic. I swear I have encountered way more aggressive civic drivers while riding than any other car. I still cant figure out why but the fockers are always trying to crowd me forcing me evade them faster than I want to be traveling.

I didn't watch the video to the end the first time and didn't realize the car had actually wrecked. I was thinking "wow what a great job to DOT does keeping the shoulders clear." Around here the shoulders aren't that wide and they are covered with slipery bahia grass. No cager here would have swerved to the shoulder b/c the ditch is just too close.
On my way home with my first bike (1986 450 Nighthawk) back in 1992, I got no more than 2 miles from dude's house and someone passed on a DY in front of me. Nothing at all like this video, but it scared me good. On funny notes, within the next 20 minutes I went on to almost drop it b/c I didn't put the kickstand down getting gas and actually drop it making the 135° sharp turn into my neighborhood. Nothing like starting off motorcycle ownership with a bang.

i just had to watch it again...
if the road was designed recently, the solid lines are about 2500 ft before and after a crest of the hill for visibility and reaction time. it looks like there are two crests so the distance of the entire no passing zone is at least 1.5 miles. here is the play by play... the ricer got impatient after tailgating a normal driver for half a mile and thought he was okay after the first hill to pass. he decides to cross the solid lines and stomps on the throttle. when he gets to the middle of the second hill he sees two headlights and panics, and pulls into the shoulder. he brakes hard and loses control. the rider is lucky in several different ways. he had his friend with him. i think the ricer would have reacted differently if he only saw one light. he went over the hill with enough time for the ricer to react. he is lucky the shoulder of the road was made of gravel, this made the car lose control and pull off the road. |

This has happened to me twice in my life. Not while I was on a bike. Once when I was 18 and in a car and about 5 years ago when I was in my work van pulling a trailer. Very UNNERVING.
