Oh and in your particular instance (@gilmorec61).... a replacement front fender which also indicates possible other body damage repairs...

Some more calculating is due sir.
Insurance = cheaper on a bike
Registration = cheaper on a bike or the same depending on year
maintenance = cheaper on a bike (examples Tires. $200 for top of the line set. Car $800 for a good set on a car)
Fuel = 60ish some odd MPG city car best looking at mid 20s. city

If you wanna argue about gear, you STILL dont really have a case as the amount of money you save in gas will buy you decent gear in a few months. Especially coming from a truck. The kid hasnt put any farkles on, nor does he have too.

Hands down cheaper than his truck, and better than buying another car for gas reason.

Definitely not a moron to think that. I think the 16 year old is better at math than you.

I'm pretty sure this is a TOS violation but you sir are an idiot. We are not talking about selling his truck and buying a bike.... We are talking about adding additional cost and expenses on top of his current costs/expenses for the truck. Yes in did the costs for a bike are "cheaper" than an auto in most cases but in no way is it "cheaper" to own 2 vehicles vs. 1 just to save on fuel. Or at least is not for any short term goals. It will take years to save enough on fuel (unless your drive a Dodge Viper) to regain the monies lost in the ownership expenses for a bike.

Someone.... needs to go back to school. Are you 16 too?

Yes I'm 16 and have a wife and child

you are clearly on this forum a lot....

Ok are we talking on top of the truck? Or from what it sounds like he would have bought something else as well as his truck. That is where I was coming from.

He bought the bike for like $1500. How many miles does he commute. What does his truck get (MPG)? If his truck gets 15 MPG and hes driving a good amount, then he will make up that initial cost very quickly. Bikes are cheap to maintain and insure. Of course it is going to generally be more to have two vehicles. but you are ignorant of the kids whole situation so its pretty silly to tell him what is the best thing to do...

Look at that, one can respond without name calling. Amazing.

Isn't this the same thing?

He also stated his potential mileage vs. gas savings. Did you miss that?

No.

I was coming mainly from the assumption that he would be buying another vehicle...

and yes I first didnt see his gas millage... honestly if hes driving 40 miles at 11MPG it wont take him that long to break even and even start saving money.

No, not yours. The other 16 year old kids post with his estimated millage and MPG of his truck. Still close enough that what I said is relevant though.

Also not sure if you missed it but my first post (as I stated) was coming from the assumption that he would have bought another vehicle. So Im not really disagreeing that he isnt saving much (if at all) on buying a bike and having a truck, rather that its a lot cheaper than having a truck and another vehicle (like a car) hence my car tire example....

Which makes 0 sense too. When did any motorcycle tire manufactures start making 50,000 plus mileage warranty tires for bikes? It's not uncommon for the auto industry so does this really make bike tires "cheaper"???

You should make those calculations again...

thats actually a pretty damn good point, which was an oversight on my part. You should be getting around 15k on your motorcycle tires unless you buy some super sticky ones.. Still I did the math should be a little cheaper closer to the same. Good point.

Oil is the same just less to buy.

But youre still ignoring my main point.... I said I was coming from the assumption he would be buying another vehicle...

I assumed we were on the same page, I noticed we were not. I mentioned it, and you keep ignoring it? Obviously I was coming from one way and you were coming from another.... Not sure why you are still arguing with me?

Is a motorcycle cheaper than a car. Yes. (at least these)
Is one Vehicle cheaper than two. Yes. (usually)

Not sure what you are arguing with me about?

Damn, that is soooo much sexier than my Quick 6. I wanted a 4, but they didn't have any at the shop I was at, at I got the 6 at a decent price. I've been riding it at its limits since a few weeks after I got it, though, so I could definitely go for some more speed. I don't have the cash for a new bicycle at the moment though.

Oh, uh, on topic...congrats Nick.

It looks great, but rides even better. It was my main transportation before my motorcycle actually. It's light and rides like butter. Took a bit to save up for this one Seat is kind of uncomfortable, but I got used to it, may eventually change that out.

Congrats! Great choice! Great way to get on two wheels for the first time! Sounds like everybody wins! Be safe and always know your limits and ride within your ability - you'll be surprised how good you will get before you even realize it!

Ummmmmmmm......I commute 100 miles a day....get 21mpg in my current vehicle. I get 65mpg on the 250. Gas is right around $4gal.......You do the math.

What "ownership" expense are you referring to?.....What expenses are incurred with motorcycle ownership as opposed to car/truck ownership? The only things I can think of is a helmet, jacket, gloves and additional insurance. For me insurance is $138yr. Everything else is optional... i.e goodies and ****. The monies saved over a 10 week period pays for the necessities(I already have all the stuff so no money out of my pocket) after that I pay the insurance off(for the year) in about 3 weeks. Next year my YEARLY insurance for the bike will be paid for(in gas savings) by the 20th of Jan. .....another 6 months and the bike(bought used) is paid for with gas savings. After that it is all money in my pocket......All of this is predicated on gas @ $4gal, anything higher and the savings increase.

I think I have three. One was where I was looking for a bike. Another where I got it. Another with videos.

I know right. It seems a bit overkill if you ask me.

I mean, he didn't even get a ninjette. You think he would find a KLX forum to take over or something.

@nickjpass I enjoy your company on ninjette.org.

After that it is all money in my pocket......All of this is predicated on gas @ $4gal, anything higher and the savings increase.
a quick a dirty analysis shows you are one of the few cases that will actually save money owning two vehicles instead of one.

100/21mpg*$4*5day = $95.2 dollars a week to commute on the truck
100/65*$4*5days = $30.8 dollars a week to commute on the bike
$64.4 dollars in savings per week on the bike assuming you commute every day of the week.

Now lets assume the truck maintence costs maintain the same (they will probably go down significantly since you are doing over 500 miles a week = 26k miles a year).

and throw some numbers at the bike costs $1500 bike + $150 for fees + $300 jacket + $300 pants + $200 boots + $200 helmet + $100 gloves + $50 bucks oils changes for the year + $138 insurance + $200 for a tire change * (26k miles / 15k miles) + $200 for any extra bs that I missed.

gives us $3484.66 total cost. (I tried to make some of those numbers high on purpose obviously gear depends on the person).

At $3484.66 for the first year you will be in the black after 54 weeks which is slightly over a year but the second year costs drop way down.

Lots of money wasting still proves you will save money.

It sounds like your costs are a lot less than this so you will be in the black much faster.

Though if you dont ride every day it will take far longer to make your money back, I didnt account sick days, rain days, snow days, or whatever conditions you don't want to ride in. Days off could hurt savings, this assumes you ride 26k a year on the bike, that is a big chunk of miles.

Looks like a nice purchase for saving money. Or at the very least have more fun on your commute.

rlocus..........Yea I think for me the purchase will be a money saver for sure. I do have to admit though that my situation is pretty atypical. I just posted to point out that to say you can't or won't save money by buying a bike is not always the case.

Is that oxymoronic>>>>> to save money by buying something...??????????????????

My wife always says that crap to me......."look honey. I saved $50".....Really, how?...."Well this dress was marked down from $150 to $100 so I saved $50"...........Ummmmm no dear. You spent $100. Had you put $50 in the savings account then that would be something. As it is I need to try and pick up a couple extra hours at work....................heheheheheh
