Meet the BMW M 1000 R 50 Years M model celebrating the 50th anniversary of BMW’s “M” division. (BMW Motorrad/)BMW Motorrad first offered the “M” package for its S 1000 RR at the end of 2018. That single-letter moniker is widely known in BMW automotive circles as the symbol of street-legal track performance.

In 2020, BMW released its first M-series motorcycle directly from the factory in the form of the M 1000 RR. The M bike took the already potent S 1000 RR and threw everything possible at it to make a street-legal track terror.


What better color than São Paulo Yellow for this unique model? (BMW Motorrad/)Now, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of BMW Motorsports GmbH, the division that began creating M-series automobiles in 1972, BMW has released the M 1000 RR 50 Years M model.

The bike, which produces 205 hp and has a claimed top speed of 189 mph, is highlighted by its São Paulo Yellow color, along with the following:

• 50 Years M Anniversary badges
• M GPS lap timer trigger software
• Rear seat cover and passenger kit
• M Carbon Package: Carbon fiber front and rear fenders, upper fairing side panels, left and right carbon tank covers, chain guard, and sprocket cover
• M Billet Pack: Billet aluminum engine protectors, folding brake and clutch levers, M rider’s rearsets, front brake lever guard
• Clear anodized swingarm
• M Endurance chain

(BMW Motorrad/)In its press release, the Bavarian manufacturer notes that BMW M GmbH (as it is known now) was founded with the idea of “uniting all BMW motorsport activities under one roof and consolidating the construction of high-performance race cars and race engines.”

Regarding the foundation, motor industry icon Robert A. Lutz, a member of the board of management of BMW AG for sales in 1972, said: “A company is like a human being. If it does sports, it stays fit, enthusiastic, more effective, and powerful.”

(BMW Motorrad/)BMW certainly remained “fit” in motorcycle racing from the 1920s and onward. Notable early performances include the accomplishments of Ernst Jakob Henne, who set 76 world land speed records between 1929 and 1937 aboard supercharged BMW motorcycles, and Georg “Schorsch” Meir, who claimed the 1939 Senior Tourist Trophy win aboard a 500cc supercharged BMW at the Isle of Man TT.

(BMW Motorrad/)In 1976, Helmut Dähn and Hans-Otto Butenuth celebrated fifth place in the Isle of Man Production TT class. BMW claims it had set the fastest time on a BMW R90S, but due to handicap rules, was relegated to fifth place behind two 250cc and two 500cc motorcycles.

Michael Dunlop, a 17-time TT winner, gave the S 1000 RR its maiden TT victory at the 2014 Superbike race, and other TT wins followed for the bike. BMW also earned top results in the dirt; early 1980s Paris-Dakar rallies were dominated by BMW GS factory riders Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier.

This 50th Anniversary model will likely soon hit the superbike collector’s list, as did the all-carbon 2017 HP4 Race, a track-only superbike limited to just 750 models.
