Derbi GPR

Picked this up on Friday -

It's a blast to ride. It has an Arrow chamber and a Mikuni flatslide. Pretty soft until about 7500, but then pulls strong to 11,000.

I need to clean it up and do a few things. Planning to powder coat the wheels blue to match the graphics, get some new tires (same sizes as the pregen), remove a few unnecessary parts, and add some neat finishes here and there.

Euro riders are probably familiar with it, but most U.S. riders have never heard of Derbi.

It's a 2-stroke 50 from Spain.

EDIT: Just figured out this one has a factory 75cc engine, and supposedly only 200 were imported.

Thanks guys.

It's pretty strong for a 50. If I didn't know better I would say it sounds and pulls like a stock 125. Not fast, but fast enough. Probably weights 200 pounds wet.

Thanks. I need to get it cleaned-up a bit and I'll shoot some more photos. Where it was sitting when I took the photo last week now has 6" of snow on it...

Got the fairings off and cleaned it up some -

Need to pull the carb and check the jetting. Also replace the tail light bulbs and figure out why the brake light isn't working. Plan to change the trans fluid and coolant while it's apart.

My first bike was a Derbi Cross City 125. Had a LOT of fun on that bike. She looks lovely and clean with all the fairings off.

Made a couple "Monoposto" mods

Milled off the footpeg mount on the pipe bracket -

and removed the passenger grab bars -

Next I need to come up with something to replace the passenger's seat - which fits really poorly and looks terrible...

Pulled off the carb and reeds. Looks like it already has carbon reeds. The setting on the carb were a bit off from "standard" (full lean on the needle, lean main jet, and lean air screw setting). I'll richen the main and set the needle to the middle (recommended) position.

The 24mm Mikuni Flatside is pretty legit -

The custom offset manifold needs some work.

The round opening is only 19mm and the backside where it attached to the reed block looks like it wouldn't flow very well. There's room in the casting to open it up to 24mm and radius the backside for smoother flow.

Kinda silly to spend the money ($250+) for the carb and toss it on a manifold like that. Saw a receipt for the manifold - $9.95 back in 2001. Barely worth that like it is.

Got rid of the stretched and grungy chain. Had to buy 2 gold RK chains and join them because they don't make one long enough. It's really long, but they do have roller guides top and bottom.

I noticed they didn't tighten-down the sprocket bolts completely (you can see one that's not tight in the photo, and there's another as well). No idea why they would not snug them down before bending the locking tab down.

Swapped the standard bolts and crimp plates for some buttonheads with internal star washers for a cleaner look -

We also discovered that it's a factory 75cc engine and not the standard 50. The 75 has the same bore but a longer stroke. I was pretty sure from the sound and the power that it wasn't a 50.

Working on modifying the intake manifold to smooth the transition from the carb. Turns out it's not as easy as I'd hoped, as the external dimension of the intake manifold where it meets the carb is not as large as the carb. If you bored it out to the same internal size as the carb (24mm) the wall thickness would not be adequate and it would fall apart. For now we are transitioning it as smooth as possible, and making a bushing that will fit between the carb and the manifold to fill the 2mm x 2mm step between them. Also will open the backside up as much as possible and get a more gentle radius to the edge where the manifold joins the reed cage.

Here's the before shot again -

...and here where it's at now after a few small mods and clean-ups -

Still have a few things to do. Needs tires and I have to finish the aluminum piece to replace the rear seat. When I have the tires off I'll powder coat the wheels to match the graphics.

Put about 75 mi on the Derbi this weekend. Finally running good. I had to purchase a new jet needle, needle jet, and main to get it right. Still plan to go leaner on the pilot jet, as the adjustment is almost max lean. Overall the carb was very rich, and now after leaning it out it will pull clean from idle to redline. Much easier to ride, and not really that slow if you keep it in the 8000 and over range - which isn't that difficult.

Here are a few photos from this weekend's cycle get together in Pine Bluff, WI -

My son rode the Derbi, I rode my buddy's '65 Bultaco Metralla, and he rode his new KTM RC390. I rode the RC390 on the way back.

Almost everything and anything shows-up.

Sweet little bike, is it premix only or is there some kind of oil injection system?

They originally have oil injection, but the previous owner disabled it and converted to premix. Generally a lot safer for the engine, as it's much more consistent and anytime it's running it has adequate oil.

It looks like the original owner (from NY) bought the carb and pipe almost immediately. Unfortunately there were a few rough edges and details that never got worked out in order to get it to run right.

Not sure why the jetting was so far off, but it was a real pain to ride in traffic the way it was. Now that the midrange mixture is right it has no problem in traffic.

A little update on the Derbi. I'm half way through changing things up -

Removed the Boy Racer graphics and went with a single Derbi on the fairings and a Derbi "D" on the tank. Made some new silver "R" graphics from the original on the windshield and put them in the space above the logo. Blue wheels to match the graphics and new tires this winter. Still have plenty of small things to do, but it's getting there. Running good now, and am in the process of changing the countershaft sprocket. Adding 1T to drop the revs a bit, as it feels like it's geared too low most of the time.

In the long run, I'm thinking I need to paint the entire bike silver, but that won't be until next year.

Also framed some artwork for the shop. Picked-up a signed print of Kenny Roberts' OW-35K and framed some photos of mine from the 90s. The one on the left is Kenny Roberts Jr on a TZ-250. I have some ideas for a few more things to go on the wall.

I just wish they still designed tail cowls like that. I love them that way. The older Ducati 748 and 996 reminds me of this style as well.

New bikes with the shark type tail look pretty good, but man the older stuff is cool.

When Cagiva owned Derbi they also owned Ducati, so they "borrowed" some styling cues from the 916 for the GPR tail. Some versions of the Cagiva Mito (125cc 2-stroke) borrowed even more. Some of them also had 7-speed transmissions.

I have to say, I do like the look.

Had the Derbi out this weekend. A bit chilly (48F) but the Derbi ran good. That means it's still rich around 70-80F.

My son warming it up before heading to pick up a buddy of mine.

My son rode the Derbi, my buddy rode his Bultaco Metralla, and I rode his KTM RC390 to the big cycle gathering (http://www.slimeycrudrun.com/) in Pine Bluff, WI, this Sunday morning.

Had an issue with the Derbi on the way back, but nothing major. It is Spanish after all...

Thanks. Not a lot of power, but not a lot of weight either - around 200 pounds wet. Once you're rolling you're good.

It's getting a few more changes shortly. Blue wheels, new tires, Rizoma barend mirror, and a few other details. The plan is to paint it silver eventually. I think it will look better all silver with blue wheels and graphics. The 2-tone black/silver is original, but not the best looking...

The new gearing (+1 on the countershaft) may be a touch too tall, but larger rear sprockets seem to be available so we may add a tooth or 2 and see how it feels.

that derbi is artful and your custom touches are really refining/distilling the look!

Thanks! I didn't realize we had so many Derbi fans here.

The goal is to "simplify and add lightness" (Colin Chapman - Lotus founder).

The Derbi is an extreme example in the benefits of agility and precision handling over raw power (but a little smoke and noise never hurts).

Probably starting on the wheels next week.

Thanks.

Can't wait to get the blue wheels and new tires on there. Should spice it up a bit.

Will do.

200 GPRs were brought in legally back in 1999 or 2000 by a dealer in NY. I think they were all originally Titled in NY. Mine had a clear Wisconsin Title when I bought it, so I don't think there are any issues.
