2010 Ninja 250 not starting

I've looked around and googled, most people with this issue are able to hear some noise when trying to start the bike. The lights turn on (gas etc) when I turn the key to the on position but absolutely nothing happens when I push the start button, bike is in neutral kick stand is up. The bike has been sitting in the garage for a couple months & want to see if I can resolve the issue before taking it to a shop. Advice is appreciated thank you.

Do the lights stay on while you're trying to start it?

Could an interlock switch be doing this? Be sure that if the side stand it down, you're in neutral. Be sure the kill switch is turned to the run position. I can't remember when the clutch lever has to be pulled, but try pulling that too.

Welcome to the board!

Test the battery voltage before starting and during cranking.

It should be over 12.7 before and no lower than 10V when you hit the button.

Most likely the battery, battery connections, or fuse.

Thank you. I don't have a tool to measure the voltage but I do have a portable jumper so I will try and jump the battery and see if that fixes the issue.

Thank you! Tried with the stand down and up, always while in neutral, going to start with trying to jump the battery hopefully it's something simple.

Really need a multimeter to test interlock switches: clutch, kickstand, neutral.

A lot of times, switches "look" fine, but are electronically defective. Only way to confirm is by measuring them.

I'm in East Bay and work in San Rafael if you're nearby, I can come over on lunch break or something and take a look.

When jumpstarting, don't have the other vehicle's engine running. The problem is that if the NInja's voltage regulator tries to regulate that voltage, it can get overloaded and fail.

You didn't say if the lights that come on when you turn on the ignition switch remain on when you hit the start button.

Unless battery is completely, terminally dead with super-low voltage, you should still have solenoid >click< and some cranking action, albeit slowly, if all interloc switches are working. If battery's too low to spin starter & engine, you'll get clackity noises from solenoid. Need to measure battery voltage before and during starting.

I bet this is issue with interlock switches. Take a look at these threads, it can become very lengthy process without testing properly:

Let's find out at least an approximate battery voltage when he tries to crank, before we get him going with more complicated troubleshooting.

I'm still waiting to hear if the lights that come on when he turns the key go back off when he hits the start button.

yeah, get one of these to measure battery voltage:
https://www.harborfreight.com/7-func...ter-63759.html
coupons to get it for free! http://www.hfqpdb.com/browse
Also some alligator clips to free up your hands: https://www.harborfreight.com/18-inc...ads-66717.html

I tried to Jump it with a portable jump box however that didn't work. I Ended up just replacing the battery with a new one and got it to turn on this morning! I left it on for a min or so & noticed a burning smell coming from the exhaust. Is this from the oil that has been sitting?

Yeah no noise was coming from the bike when trying to start it but after the new battery I got it running. I'm concerned about the burning smell coming from the exhaust if anyone knows or can clarify if it's just the oil.

Appreciate it! I did get it to turn on with the new battery but am still a newbie when it comes to working on bikes so I may take you up on your offer thank you! Gonna put in some new gas in it & probably change the oil & filter.

I wouldn't be concerned about that.

Check the oil level and always keep a close eye on it as the little Ninjas will use some.

Run Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 or a 40-grade cycle specific oil, preferably synthetic.

Here's some maintenance info - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Ninja250_Howto

Use 87 octane Regular, no benefit from increased octane with the Ninja.

Appreciate it! That really helped me when I was changing the oil!
