Air Filter Box Question

Question: I plan to change out my air filter to a set of K&N Pods, but is there anything I should know before, like is there any emission equipment that will not work if I take the filter box out?
With all the dust in the air recently here, my air filter has gotten quite filthy and it needs to be replaced. Pods sound like a good alternative but I just don't want to mess something else up?

you will need a new crank case breather filter as the airbox provides clean air to the case. obviously will need to rejet. you should have a 49-state bike so you shouldn't have any of the california crap to worry about.

Damn, thats what i was hoping to not have to do just right yet. Is there a better solution to the foam pad that comes stock with the bike? If I leave the box in for now, is there a suitable replacement filter that won't damage the engine?
And yes, it is a 49 state bike, carburated.

just clean the air filter or replace it with new oem if you dont want to change anything else. 'better air filters' usually mean they flow easier. any change in flow requires a change in jetting.

Now for one more noob question, the oil used on the filter, what type of oil it it? How much should I apply?

i use about 9000decaliters.

Really? You use 237.75 gallons of oil on your air filter? Wow, you could have just told me to figure it out somewhere else, but thanks anyways!

Emphasis on re-jetting. With the K&N pods you will be taking in a lot more air, making your bike run very lean. These bikes already run lean with the factory airbox. You will see no benefit if you're lucky, and actually will probably lose engine performance if you don't re-jet after changing the way air flows in and our of the engine. If you do re-jet it will run great, and possibly a bit less choked up too.
