Why is My Gas Cap Still Leaking?!

Ok, so I have been having this issue with gas leaking/pouring from the gas cap if i filled the tank too much when I put the bike on the side stand. To rememdy that i've been running it almost empty then only filling it halfway.

I got tired of that so I bought this part (14025) http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...9388#sch284116
because when I looked at the old one on my bike i could tell it was rotted and not sealing at all on the left side of the tank.

Put the new one on, filled up the tank, came home. No gas leaked...Until I went out for a long, semi hard ride. Same problem, still leaking.

What is my next step?

Also, I noticed something that looked out of place. When I removed the gas cap, there was some sort of rope or something inside the filler neck (I think? the place where you put the gas nozzle to fill the tank lol) It looked like maybe someone put it there to soak up gas? I have no idea but i left it in there.

Can you take some pics of your lid while it's open? The stock lids are spring loaded and usually have a rubber gasket,but if the gasket is bad then you'll get a little leak. Is it leaking from the lid or the surrounding assembly that's bolted to the tank?

There are two ways in which the cap can leak out: through the vents or the gasket.

1. How high are you filling it? Past the metal "neck"? I always fill to the beginning of that metal neck on the center stand.
2. Are you leaking any fuel from the Fuel Tank Overflow hose at the bottom of your bike?
3. Is your gas cap properly secured? If there is something blocking your fuel overflow (that "rope"?) then you overfill it past the neck, you'll leak gas out of the cap because it has nowhere else to go. Not good for the paint or for your health.

I would disassemble the gas cap if there is an obstruction, clean everything, and then put it back together.

I also have a gas cap question. It seems my bike is using a lot more fuel even when I ride conservative. I got 214 miles before switching to my reserve. And when I park the bike I smell gas. Its not leaking from the petcock to the filter to the carb.

I didn't think so. Isn't the average mpg 60-70? If so I should be getting close to 300 miles. Although its been windy here lately that might account for poor mileage. Would a worn chain and sprocket reduce the mileage? I do a lot of 6th gear riding staying between 5k-7k rpms

No, mid 50's-60 is normal. People who consistently get 70 either have jetting problems or ride like they're afraid of the bike.

I'll make sure to watch my trip more closely for that range. What about the gas smell? There isn't any wetness from the petcock to the carb so I'm assuming its coming from the cap.

I get 45mpg and I ride it hard most of the time... my GF's pregen gets 70 and she rides it the same way. If you smell gas it could also be coming directly from the carb. My carb was seeping gas out of the float bowls.
