Just got back from getting my permit. I am still going to wait and take the MSC before I get on t he road. In KY permits last 3yrs and only restrictions are must wear helmet, no passengers and stay in state of KY.

Congrats on your new ride and welcome to the forum!! This site is awesome and very friendly. You are doing the right thing and taking the right steps when getting back in the saddle again. You aren't going through mid life crisis, you are just craving some good time fun on the road. Don't let anyone syc you out about the dangers of riding a motorcycle, just be very cautious of your surroundings and always plan ahead. I get nervous everytime I go out on my bike too but, I will not let my fear get the best of me.

Read about the SV650 shock as well but I think it requires a mod.
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Installing_an_EX500_shock

this answers the how to part of swapping a shock. the hard part is getting the bolts loose since theyre all gunked up from road crap. I used WD40 and let it sit for an hour.

From what I've read, the ex500 shock is softer than the newgen 250, so you end up cranking the preload up. that's why I went with the 250R shock. plus it raises the rear to help with handling.

as for finding one, it took me a month of looking. I posted in the marketplace without luck. ended up getting one off ebay from someone who was going to track their bike and upgraded for about $50 plus shipping. it's a straight bolt on replacement. just put it on the center stand and move the coolant bottle
