Uhh, petcock? And lots of backfire.
I was on my first long ride today (about 300 miles in a big circle around Phoenix with a new riding group I found), and really the first time I ever ran the tank down. I got to about 200 miles and she started stumbling, so I reached down to the usual place to flip on the reserve to get me to a gas station.
And I felt around... ... ... ...and I pulled over after she died... and not one of us could find the damn petcock. I looked under the tank and it looks like there's three little places for hoses to connect to. Only one is connected up, and it goes straight to what I assume is the carbs. I say I assume because it looks nothing like what was on my pregen. Is it common for a newgen to not have a petcock? Did they stop doing that? I know some have them per YouTube, but evidently mine either doesn't or it was removed for some reason. I also got a lot of backfire today during deceleration. If I run 91 it happens less often but evidently there's a series of hoses I can remove that bypasses the Kleen Air system. I bought it with aftermarket exhaust, so I assume nobody removed it and that's why it's popping a ton when I decel. Pics and video tomorrow morning when it's light out. |

Fuel gauge =no reserve
Lean the bike way over on it's left side, that's the super secret reserve and can get you a few miles sometimes

There is definitely a petcock. It's on the left side of the bike. But you have to remove that little fairing to get to it.
But just two positions: ON and PRI. So technically, it doesn't do you any good. That's why they hid the petcock under the plastics. Unless you want to service or rebuild the petcock, there is no reason to mess with it. On both my 250 & 300, I have popping on decel as well. Both had slip on pipe. It's normal.

Cool, today I'm taking the fuel sender out and cleaning it. Hopefully that'll allow the arm to make contact in the potentiometer and show true fuel levels.

Most of us fill up before 200 miles on the tank. Although I can squeeze 300 miles out/tank, I tend to move to the pumps as soon as the ODO rolls 220.
If you're bike isn't jetted for the change in exhaust, you should look into that. Please post a picture of the hoses you see, as 2 should be attached to the petcock - a big one which is the fuel hose, and a little one, which is the vacuum safety valve. If the vacuum tube wiggled it's way off of the petcock, the petcock would close as if the engine was shut off (as it's design is to kill fuel flow in the even of a crash or some such) and that would obviously make it seem like the bike is out of fuel. Hope this helps.
