Shifting without shifter!?

A friend of mine just recently dropped his bike, there is no damage other than the fact that his shifter completely broke off, the bike is stuck in gear; the thought occured to me, is is possible to shift the bike without using the shifter and if so, how?

you can shift without a clutch, but u will need the shifter to switch it into another gear

Is any of the shift shaft extending out from the cases? If so, it's sometimes possible to use a Vise-Grip or similar tool to lock onto that portion of the shift shaft and then use the Vise-Grip itself as a temporary shift lever. Best used only once or twice to get the bike into 2nd or 3rd gear so it can be limped home without excessive shifting and risking knocking the Vise-Grip off the bike.
