Instrument Cluster Suggestions

So I'm almost done with my streetfighter project and now that I've installed the new headlight assembly I'm bummed out to see I'm not going to reuse the original cluster. I can get it to fit with a simple custom bracket, but it looks OK when sitting on the bike, looks ugly from the front and utterly grotesque from the sides. I wanted to stay with the original to because of the ideal functionality and also because I'm cheap but after all the work I've done to achieve a particular look, I can't bring myself to sacrifice so much aesthetics.

I'm leaning towards the Trail Tech Vapor because of quality, tech support/info which will run about $150 for the gauge and another $55 for the indicator light panel. Before I pull the trigger, can anyone recommend a less costly set-up? Just looking for something compact, with reliable/detailed instructions and with a high enough RPM range. There's a ton of inexpensive Chinese stuff on Amazon but few reviews and most don't speak highly of the quality and user support.

Appreciate any opinions and options

How about painting case of cluster flat-black so it blends in?

Note that TrailTech Vapor only goes up to 12k-rpms. My experience with their support has not been satisfactory. I end up doing board-level repairs with replacement of SMD components.

People have used Koso clones successfully.

Mine doesn't look ideal, but it's not too bad. I just trimmed it a little. I decided that if something in it quits I'll try a Danmoto gauge. I believe it has all the functions of the original cluster, and goes up to 14,000 RPM.

I was planning on painting it but the problem is the fit, it sticks out too much.

Hmmm...now I'm doubting the Trail Tech.

I was planning to mount my cluster similar to yours but since I went with clipons (lower) and a duel headlight (wider), there's just not enough clearance. I'd have to install it floating well above the headlight, looks terrible.

I really like that Danmoto Nano, especially since it has a higher RPM range than the Trail Tech. And it's so tiny & easy to mount.

Thanks for the info!

But not too small.The Vapor is only 3" wide and not easy to read as DanMoto unit.

So far the only drawback of the Danmoto Nano I could find (for my application) is the lack of a water temperature gauge. If I go this route I'd have to get a separate temperature gauge or get an empty housing and use the existing gauge.

Something like this might work?:

Acewell?

Anyone have any experience with this Acewell gauge? Seems to cover all the bases around $160.

The one I referenced say it has a "Coolant/Oil Temperature bar gauge 1000-17 Ohm range (10C-130C VDO Standard)"

I emailed them and asked for the instruction/installation manual. I don't see anything for the temperature.

I agree. It's the semi-circular unit in my link that I was saying has the temperature function.

Looks like different gauge. You want manual for SP-00008
http://www.danmoto.com/Ebay/Items/SP-00008/SP8.pdf

Just test existing temp-sensor to see if it falls within same NTC range:

10c = 1000 ohms
130c = 17 ohms

Usually boiling in pot of water is test, but not for 130c. Maybe boil in oil?

The Nano is the one I'm interested in, not the 180 (mislabeled on the instruction sheet you posted above).

I'm looking into the Acewell right now. I'll probably go with Acewell or the Nano.

Sorry I'm late to the parade, but have you looked at the Blue Collar Bobbers gauge cluster offered for their Ninja 250 Cafe Racer kit? It uses all of the original gauges and warning lights transplanted into a new housing.

I don't know if they offer it as an individual part, but they seem like pretty decent folks and might be willing to work a deal.

I've contacted them twice for parts off their kit and they refuse to sell individual parts. Seems it would be better to make a few extra bucks here and there, but oh well.

Hey DodgerDad, I have just ordered the BlueCollarBobbers kit for my Zombie 250. If you want the gauge cluster housing, let me know. We don't plan on using it for our build and its just going to sit on a shelf. PM me an offer because when it comes in I can turn around and send it back out to you sir.

I bought a Danmoto Nano last week. Thanks for the offer, initially this is what I wanted to buy/install. Either way I don't think it would have fit because of the clip-ons that I'm using. Thanks!
