USB keys

I can't get google to answer my question specifically.

I'm wondering if I can use a USB stick as a "key" to access specific files/folders stored on my computer, not just to give access to windows.

I leave my old laptop at work now, and want to secure patient information, but don't want to lock down the entire machine...... so in case you where wondering, it's not for porn.

I am assuming you want to let people have access to the laptop and just have certain files inaccessible? What OS is on it? Details do help.

Of course you could always copy those files to the USB drive and just keep them on there.

My suggestion, keep the admin account and create a guest account. Your files are protected under admin, everyone else can access the guest acct.

Yes, you can use something like Truecrypt (www.truecrypt.org). Encrypt a portion of your drive on the laptop. Keep patient files only on that portion. Save the keyfile to decrypt that volume only to a USB key that you keep with you. Make a backup copy of the keyfile and store it somewhere else, as if you do lose it, the data is essentially gone.

I've been playing with truecrypt a little... keeping the keyfile on the USB sounds like it would essentually accomplish what I want. I'm not sure where the keyfile is though. I'll dig throught the manual a bit.

thanks

Talk to the hospital/work IT crowd before you put any patient info on your own machine, may be different in CA but here that's an instant dismissal offence.

They aren't actually clinical notes.... mostly 'pay your bill' letters. It's also a private practice of one, so I'm not going to fire myself.
