Since all the fairings are off....
Just received a new-to-me 09 250 with 8-9k on it and tearing it down a bit to clean it and overall, get my fingers all over it.
Since all the fairings are removed, what are some of the things that could be done? So far, have done: * oil change * safety wired drain plug and oil filter plug * clean chain * new Bridgestone 003 RS coming in next week * removed frame plugs Yet to do: - clean air filter - front brake seems fine. should check level though - coolant level is fine - remove front sprocket cover? This piece even needed? - remove chain guard - hopefully getting after market rearsets shortly - set rear shock preload Suggestions? Ideas? Comments? |

Are you using the bike for the track?
If not fully jetting, shimming the needles is popular and improves low end response. Removing the snorkel and Kleen Air. Since you have a CA bike, you can remove the CA emissions box. Most of this stuff is on the DIY link as well. Good luck! |

also, with 8-9k on it, when was the last time a valve check was done? if it hasnt been done, it should be. the valves get tight. adjusting them makes a world of difference in smoothness and throttle response

every few hundred miles i like to remove the main engine carriage bolt for cleaning... also don't forget to recharge the air in the twin shocks... oh and your blinker fluid should be changed every few thousand miles...
change your spark plugs and do a plug check after

Go over and PROPERLY torque every bolt on the bike. Front and rear suspension and everything.
Adjust all the cables and hand controls and get a service manual and read up the periodic maintenance section. You'll be surprised how many bolts are loose, unless the guy was a wrench head. Valve job. Oil and radiator flush at same time Chain slack, check brake pads and bleed the lines with new Dot4 fluids. Check the steering stem nut and steering for play too. Check the clutch cable for any visible wear. How is the battery? Get a new battery and Tender and be good to go for three years no questions asked.. Treat it like you are rebuilding all the important stuff from the ground up. Tires? (brand, pressure, wear marks, cracks from being stored otuside?) I like to replace all the bulbs when I get a new bike in the blinkers and headlights so I know I'm good to go for another year also. Clean them with alcohol to remove fingerprints when you install them to make them last longer. Check all the fuses, listen for the fan to come on when it gets hot and go off when you shut the bike off after the fan cools it down, feel for play in the rims and wheels, listen for squeeking from the speedo cable and lube if necessary.. I could go on and on and on all day.
