Switching to ubuntu

Well last night while about to shut down my PC my Firefox closes, I get 10 system error popups about disk write errors, and then my PC restarts itself... I scream great... another late night before school. Anyways when the virus restarted my PC I went straight to safe mode. ran malwarebytes and Avast scanner which found some threats, but when I booted into normal mode, avast kept trying to block explorer from loading a webpage so back to square one... downloaded combofix, disabled avast and malwarebytes and ran it, restarted same problem. tried EST online, returned no problems, decided to download TDSSkiller, it wouldn't run, downloaded Rkill and ran it, then tried to run TDSSkiller, still nothing. Opened Task manager and saw that TDSSkiller would run then close followed by a RarExtLoader.exe running then closing. This led me to look elsewhere, tried to find the file in my C drive, couldn't find it, opened up disk manager and low and behold a 10mb boot partition that I didnt make. The virus installed itself into the partition and booted with windows reinstalling itself each time. I delete the partition and run all my scans including TDSSkiller that now runs, PC is clean. Lesson learned, no longer disabling UAC and no longer making myself an admin. And since I mostly use my PC for web browsing/ video editing im now installing Unbuntu as my Primary OS

What a smart virus. Is linux less prone to viruses?

yep, less viruses are around for it, you have to use the root and inter password to install anything, no registry like windows, pretty much very little to no viruses for unbuntu/ linus why do you think so many servers use linux?

Idk man I've never used it lol. When I ordered my laptop 4 years ago (it came with a free netbook, win!) I almost got a netbook with ubuntu but then decided just to get windows xp since I was familiar with it.

What's ubuntu cost? Maybe I'll consider dual booting my PC

I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 for the last few months. Before that, I used mostly XP and some Windows 7. It took me a while to get used to Ubuntu, but I like it a lot.

It is free. It sure as hell boots up faster than XP & 7. It definitely seems less virus prone than XP (not to say that says much).

The only thing I find annoying is needing to use Wine to sort of emulate Windows software.

linux... its less buggy than windows, more secure than mac. prettier than everything. oh yeah its free and runs on virtually everything. (thousands more platforms than either mac or windows can claim) oh yeah and 99% of the software made for it is also free. its even running on like 50% of cell phones now (android) not to mention tablets and its massive embedded hardware influence. i'm not even going to start on the academic/research benefits. baxter, the new "human friendly" factory robot that is supposed to put foreign labor out of business even runs ROS running on linux. honestly linux is the future of computing.

why do people use other operating systems again?

I installed office on linux, downloaded kdenlive, an awesome movie editor thats free. Firefox is stock browser, has flash, has java, has an appstore like thing where you can downloaded more apps mostly for free, has a music player, video player. I didnt even find it that hard to setup my drivers and printer.
