Loose cam chain wear?

Anyone have this issue? The chain has worn down the oil galley pickup thinger. This is my 2010 250 with 21k miles. Haven't checked the chain for stretch yet.

I looked at a first gen engine I have apart. It has a small scratch.. MY guess is the chain slings out on down shifting. But that tab is there to keep the chain from going to far, looks like it works. no worries, maybe shine it up a little.

Would I see any issues if I cut that piece away to replace the chain? I'm trying to avoid splitting the case.

its not from the chain, the case is cast and then machined. those are machine marks. if it was caused by the chain it wouldn't look so clean like it was cut with a real tool. it would simply break that little piece off.

The mark is from the side of the chain rubbing on the tab. It does not hit it hard.

The tab is there to make sure the cam chain does not jump on the crank gear.
I would not recommend removing it.

If you need a new chain at 21k you might as well stop riding.

my xl350 had 44k and the chain was replaced but it wasnt super bad.

Your chain most likely did this when u did not install the guide. There are no machining marks. Mine was spotless.

lets see the chain should last atleast 50k unless you are revving the piss out of the bike all the time.

lots of things *should* do a lot of things. are you saying running at high revs damages the cam chain? you are being extremely vague here. "ur bike broke, quit life bro"

Yes high rev's all the time will stretch the chain over time.

If it where me I would pull the cct and make sure it is working as it should.

On my cb750 I replaced the cam chain with 40k on it rode the bike for about 5k and had a stretched chain again. So I thought let me replace the cct while i'm at it rode another 15k and sold the bike.

I just looked at my 2008 engine. I definitly rev the piss out of it all the time. Really.
I never ride on the street and I race it any chance I get. The 2008 engine has a tiny little mark. My 2009 engine gets the same treatment. No mark. But I have had a mechanical cam chain tensioner on that engine since it had 21 miles on it.

Most of the first gen engines I have are over 40000 miles. They all show a little mark.

I would say the when decelerating the chain slings around some . And with the stock cam chain tensioner there is play in the chain sometimes.

I would just split the case. It's not hard to do. And if you replace the chain replace the tensioner. Maybe look into the mechanical type.

Good to know. I'll switch to motor B for the time being and just put up this motor up until I can get around to splitting the case and examine everything.

This was prior to me forgetting the exhaust cam chain guide.
