WOT - easy question

Wide Open Throttle: does that mean you are literally holding the grip to the stop, or does that mean high on the RPM band?

I'm reading an article on tuning in preparation for my jet kit, so I thought I should clarify that.

Throttle all the way open, grip to the stop. Can be at 1000 rpm or 12000 rpm. Whole lot more fun at 12000 rpm, though.

So for tuning.... how do you do that w/o going to the track? The only time I have ever been at WOT was the time I wanted to see how fast she goes. And I do have a moderately heavy wrist.

Rolling road dyno would be my guess.

I use wot on the 250 pretty much any time I have it out... I thought it was required on these bikes

LOL... I'm always pushing mine, I just find that once I get through 6 gears, WOT brings me to ~ 100mph (only tried that once), and if I am in a lower gear, I hit the rev-limiter. So maybe there is something I am still not understanding.

Hold WOT until redline, shift up, hold WOT until redline, shift up, and repeat. On the ninjette that works through about 4th gear before speeds get up there. It's one of the fun things about this bike, actually. Try the same exact method on a bike that hits triple-digits in first gear, and you realize that you can never hold WOT for more than a second or two on the street before risking life, limb, and license.

Playing WOT is one of the great things about these bikes, with my last one I hardly ever got to play WOT

Hehe +1...I'm usually bouncing off the rev limiter before I even get through an intersection.

But with regards to jetting...can this not be done in neutral? Noobish of me to ask, I know, but when it comes to tuning FI vehicles, you typically have fuel maps and injector duty loads and all that insanity. Since this is a carb'd bike....wouldn't WOT in neutral be sufficient?

It does not matter what gear you are in for tuning. You could be in 6th gear or 1st as long as you are WOT when you turn off the engine the plugs will give a correct reading.

no... the engine needs to be loaded to be jetted properly. Besides, you should never rev a bike to a high rpm/redline while it is in neutral.

For my own riding style, I noticed this year I'm riding at 10-12k RPM and 1-2 gears lower all the time, even found out what that annoying "rev limiter" is... damn thing cuts my fuel or something when I'm having fun. Not sure how anyone rides WoT with that nanny in place

I find my bike is like a fine woman... you really need to keep an ear on her, and give her a kick when she asks for it... otherwise she cuts the power out on you...
