Hmmm, this feels very familiar.... Kinda like the rear-derailleur hanger on bikes. They would bend or get permanently damaged in crashes. A lot of racing frames were totalled because of damaged threads at hanger. Then Canondale came up wiht revolutionary solution, a replaceable hanger!

So... I'm thinking an intermediate plate between frame & rearsets. The plate would be attached with break-away bolts so it would get ripped away before sufficient force was applied to damage frame... Hmmm... or explosive bolts...

Agreed, replaceable hangers are the way to go. They were around in the 1970s though, so while Canondale deserves credit for using them, they don't really deserve the credit for the idea.

we already have a fix, solid metal plate welded to the frame in that spot.

Yeah, but a more solid metal plate will still bend due to leverage of rearset. Which will extend the damaged area further and possibly bend frame near swingarm pivots.

I'm going in opposite direction, gonna use aluminium bolts to hold rearsets on. At 1/3rd strength of steel, they might be just strong enough to hold everything together, yet snap easily during crash before any damage to frame is done. Maybe i'll do some destructive testing and if they don't snap easily enough, I'll hollow out the bolts slightly.

Run some quick numbers for a "realistic" shear and/or bending case that feasibly makes intuitive sense... you may be able to stick your aluminum bolts on the lathe and drill the centers to optimize their yield strength to what you need so it's strong enough for full rider weight plus some safety factor, but easy enough to break that you save the frame.

Well I picked up the Versys-X 300 yesterday & did 50 miles down country lanes & discovered a couple things. 1. The seat is rock hard, so will need sorted. 2. The screen being straight as in nearly vertical causes a lot of turbulence around my head, I'm 6'1". 3. There is a lot of resonance from the intake under the seat.

So the seat will take a while to sort out, a gel pad will be used in the mean time.
The screen issue was confirmed today by taking it off & having a short ride, no turbulence ! It's now been modified to a more rakish angle, so will test ride again & see if it helped.
The resonance will have to wait & see.

Jet washed the dirt from the lanes off today too.

Putting her back together, the bike is going to be ready, unfortunately I am not positive about my suit. Haven't put the forks back onto the bike yet as I am going to change the fluid.

Very cool. I think if they up it to a V-X-400 after the Ninja 400 release it may have to be considered for my next "all arounder" bike.

I ride all winter if it's not too cold and the roads are clear. (central Iowa) I stick to in-town, not-very-fast riding. It was 25ºF when I left on a couple of errands and almost took the car, then decided to try the balaclava. I took the balaclava off when I when into a store so they wouldn't think it was a stickup. Then I decided to ride without it to see the difference. It is definitely helpful in mid-20's temps!

I wear a balaclava any time the temperature is below about 50 or 55, but I tend to ride longer rides out in the country. It's amazing how much clothing it takes to stay warm when riding 55 mph for 100 miles.

No doubt about that. One can bear almost anything for 15 minutes in town!

I ride year around, but seeing shiny/damp patches on the road below 30, gets a little sketchy. 50 degrees is a relative to the time of year, if its fall, it feels cold, but spring its warm.

I usually take the Moto Guzzi Mille GT on the long rides and multi-day trips, and I always stick to the smallest, most winding back roads I can find.

Bill, even when I'm out on the H2, I'm almost never going fast enough for a ticket. I've come to like curves more than straight line speed. Although once in a while a 2-stroke needs to get the oil that's collecting in the crankcase blown out good.

Hey TJ,

Which balaclava would you choose?

Very nice!!! Well, the one on the left is $3.29 and the one on the right is $5.39 with free shipping. I think the Alpinestars will have to wait.

Thanks,

Bill

I put some fresh rubber on and then went and broke them in up in the mountains. I also put a stock length kickstand and dogbones on since the p/o had it lowered at some point.

After the mountains...love them on the Ninja as much as I did on my R3.

Anything is a lot better than nothing, so I'm sure you'll like the one you get. The Alpinestars version has two layers of skirt, one that tucks in and one that can stay on top or get tucked in to a different layer. Motorcyclegear.com has a good description.
