Clutch switch delete.
So i removed the clutch switch when i cut down my harness... I can not start my bike in gear... Should i connect the wires or leave it open? Had an issue with the bike dying in gear this past weekend because the wires came apart (i didn't permanently connect them in case i read the schematic wrong), put them back together and the bike ran fine other than having to be in neutral to start it.

There are 3 safety switches; clutch, neutral and sidestand. All 3 can be disabled at your own risk.

After reviewing a wiring diagram, my bad, sidestand doesn't control the starter, only ignition.

If it still won't start in gear, they aren't connected together properly OR are disconnected somewhere else in the loom.
Those are the only wires preventing you from starting in gear.

Yea i love being able to start it in gear now! So much easier haha. It would have sucked before if i would have stalled off the line of a race and had to find neutral and then start it and put it back in first haha. MY switch never worked before i cut down the harness either.

I leave my key in the ignition all the time, but I live in a weird area. Normal people would get their bike stolen if they didn't need a key to start it.

If a thief wants your bike, they're going to kick the bars to break the bar lock and either break your ignition switch, punch it out or bypass it. If they want your bike, they will take it period. Besides, without an ignition switch will they figure out how it works?

Yea i already ditched mine. Have the switch in plain sight on my home made fairing stay, have had people look right at it and not see it haha. I had fun figuring out how to get the switch to work while still having some lights hooked up haha

hehe. I have a switch for my heated grips. People ask me what it's for and I'll tell them that's my wheelie power switch.

So I am planning on doing this soon. I removed the whole turn signal/headlight switch housing/clutch switch from the main wire harness. Can I just use a wire to jump the hot and ground female terminals on the main wire harness?

Here is a snip from the manual for the left bar harness. Just need to connect the two wires. I had an issue on my 250 with something not being grounded, but that was a long time ago and i dont completely remember what it was. See you at NCbike. |

On the PreGen/500, the clutch switch bridges to the common black/yellow ground wire. On the NewGen (and I assume the 300), it bridges to the sidestand switch instead.
On the older bikes, pulling the clutch will let the bike start and run, regardless of any other switch's status. On the new bikes, pulling the clutch will only work if the sidestand is up/bypassed also.

Hate to bring up an old thread, but I'm looking for some insight. Converting my 300 into a dedicated track bike and want to remove the clutch side controls. Including the clutch switch...
I will also be removing the kickstand... so I'll have to bypass that as well. I get the idea of connecting the 2 wires feom the clutch switch together... and the 2 wires from the kickstand switch together... but someone above said something about a neutral switch. I can't find any info on this. I want to be able to start in neutral or in gear with clutch in Any help is appreciated! |

If you disconnect the clutch switch wires and connect them together, you can do what you said you want to do, since the electrical system will think you're always pulling the clutch lever. Obviously you will also be able to start the engine with the lever released (clutch engaged), making you lurch forward, but I assume that's not going to be a problem for a track bike.

Disconnect the clutch switch at the clutch perch and the harness. Then remove the turn signal housing. You can then separate the clutch switch wires.

Thank you both. I'll dig into it tomorrow...
Any idea what honeybadgerry was talking about with the "neutral switch"? I should be able to just cut the kickstand sensor and jump the 2 wires... and do the same for the 2 clutch wires... soldering then of course. Anyway, thanks again. Howlinhoss - I dig your 300 build. I've come across it several times in my research for building my bike. |

The neutral switch is 3rd safety-interloc. If you bypass clutch and kickstand switches, it'll be possible to start bike in gear with clutch engaged. The neutral switch is only safety left and prevents the bike from starting unless transmission is in neutral.

Do you mean that normally it does that? As you said above, once you bypass the clutch lever switch, the neutral switch won't keep you from starting in gear, at least if I'm remembering right. I admit I'm used to old bikes with no interlocks at all.
