Hmmm, could be needing inspection and R&R of the following:

- cam-chain tensioner
- valve-clearances
- loose spark-plug?

Easy compression-test will tell you status of valve-clearance without having to open anything up. Then proceed from there.

Does it change when it warms up?

Have you changed the oil? Is the oil up to the proper level?

Perhaps loose header bolt? Exhaust can "tick" if not sealed properly.

Changed oil 3 times. I do ride it fast.If it was a car I would say it sounds like valve or lifter noise. Switching to Mobile 1 10w 40 synthetic today. In a couple hours. I guess I'm going to take it to Kawasaki next week. Bought it on June 14.

Most likely that's what it is.

Valve adjustment is not scheduled to be done until 7500 mi. Most of the time the valves will wear tighter than spec, and need to have additional clearance added, so "ticking" (loose valves) shouldn't be very common - especially when new.

Does it quiet down when warm?

I'm assuming you are using Mobil1 4T - correct? Don't use the standard auto Mobil 1 10W-40.

No doesn't quiet down warmed up. I ride it to work and back. 20 miles one way. And I do open it up a lot. I was thinking maybe values. I changed oil again today. Switched to synthetic Mobile 1 K&N oil filter. That's the best I could find around here.

Thanks everyone for advice.

Yes I'm using mobile 1 4t motorcycle oil synthetic 10w40. Hanged it tonight before I came to work. Sounded good for a while then got bad again. Can I put a manual tensioner on my bike. And should I do that or just take it back to Kawasaki?

If it's under warranty, I'd certainly make the Kaw hierarchy fix it before doing any work that could allow them to claim that you voided the warranty.

And welcome to the board, Michael!

As TJ said - take it back to the dealer. They should make any repairs under warranty if needed or at least note it down in case problems present themselves later.

Took bike in today. The owner listened to it told me he thought it was the chain tensioner. Said they have never had any problems out of that motor. Told me it would stop doing it eventually.
Thanks all
Mike.

Make sure it's documented that you presented the problem to the dealer on that date and don't hesitate to go back in a few thousand miles when it's still doing it.

That's a start.

A new tensioner isn't going to be expensive or hard to install, so I would think they would want to replace it under warranty as to avoid any damage that an incorrectly adjusted cam chain may cause.

Simple, quick, inexpensive fix at this point.

Not so much later.

I might push for it.

DEALER B.S.!

Go back and get that in writing. The early 250s had a crappy C.T. design and supposedly the later design is better-I put a manual in my '02. That said anything can happen to mass produced items. Pieces can be flawed, broken spring, machining chip etc. If the dealer was reputable he'd take the time (2 bolts) to try a new one or at least take it out for inspection. If it heals itself then you have a miracle bike.
