2012 650R Updated
Anyone see the 2012 650R update today? Looks like they have all the important colors covered - green, red, and black. Did i mention green?

And they did the two-part seat like everyone has been asking for. I watched some of the videos on the Kawasaki site and the seat height is the same but they increased the padding and comfort of the seat. The dash is new with analog tach and digital underneath. They added more vibration dampening throughout, new............ well lots of new styling cues and such. I HAVE to demo one at Biketoberfest to see if she's as sweet as she looks. If she rides as sweet as she looks that will be my next bike, cause omg I love how it looks now.

Nice. This is back on my "possible next bike" list now. Hated the 1-piece seat and the front-end. The redesigned front-end and 2-piece seat look a lot better. The tubular swingarm looks pretty cool. Don't think I've seen that on a bike before.

I'd love to buy this as a 2nd bike! The green would be awesome. I'd have my green 250R & green 650R. Win.

I didn't like the last front face profile and I like it even less now. Too much like the Ninja 1000.
Even though the tail was a little worse than the 2009, I liked the 2008 and earlier model better, especially the ones with the cowl-line seat (silver or green passenger area). I also dislike the new "tubular" swingarm and frame that is shaped like the more solid frames of the super sports but made with multiple tubes. |

I think the green one looks the best. Maybe I'll just skip on the 250r, save a bit more and just get this as my first bike? hehe jk. I love the 250 too much to do that.

Sure this is a dumb question, but do the 650s have clip-ons?

No, still the handlebar set up but with more rubber insulation for less vibration. It will never have clip-ons, that's reserved for the supersports. This has more of the sport-touring riding position which would not allow for clip-ons.

I was looking at some threads regarding the 650 and clip-ons, and the general consensus seemed to be a definite no against the clip-ons due to having to either lower them to far, or having to mount them under which had clearance issues...

Looks much better to me, its back on my considerations list pending a demo next summer. Just need to figure something out about those handlebars; I still don't like the way those are.
Couldn't you get clipons with risers just like the 250? Saw a few threads on people getting risers from woodcraft but I don't know about clearances and this is a new bike, things might be a little different.

I really like the ER-6N instrumentation. Shame they won't bring it to the US again. Wonder if it's possible to retro fit to an 09....

He's talking about the updated 2012 model which according to the Kawasaki site is NOT coming to the US. We still get the older 2010 model for now it would seem, at least according to the site. |

The ER-6N was never really as much a success in the States. Not sure why, exactly. But I don't really think a two year sales attempt, with one color per year, and no real advertising was a very noteworthy effort on Kawi's part. Perhaps the 2012, with a more attractive seat, headlight, instrumentation, and most of all smaller cowling would fare better. But we won't know, because they ditched it in 2010. Hopefully their other naked bike (the Z1000) holds up better. I would have loved to have seen an ER-2N version of the Ninjette. Although... to be honest, it wasn't particularly pretty under the sexy bodywork they have it in. The 650R looks nicer. I'm not sure about the dual tube frame, but the seat and adjustable windscreen are nice touches. The only gripe I could find, styling wise, is that it just doesn't really stand out. It's a pretty generic looking sport bike. Which is great, if you want a bike that looks like an averaged out sport bike. But that's just personal taste. I think it looks nicer than the previous version, and that looked pretty good to me as well. I'm glad to see Kawi offers a mid-range sports bike that's not a hardcore crotch rocket, and that they're committed to developing and improving it, without changing it's purpose or price radically.

The 650R is. The 2010 ER-6n will remain as the current model.

90% sure that will be my next bike.
I like that it's a more upright seating position over the supersports. Seeing as I do most of my riding with my dad on his Harley being comfortable over a long distance is important. |

Great changes. New styling cues from the supersports improve the looks tremendously, as does the fixed non-banana seat. Massively improved styling. Also like the exhaust, better vibration dampening, new instrument panel is awesome (miles to empty, a feature to tell you when you are maximizing MPG, analog tach), LED's, flushmounts. Also like what they kept, low seat height (but with better padding), narrow profile kept for ease of riding, kept the more upright seating position.
Looks like they took the most common aftermarket changes and incorporated them into stock. And fixed the looks. Awesome changes for 2012, awesome retention of best features of 2011. Well done.

All bike and auto manufacturers do this when they release new models. Selling the older models as new in other countries until they're ready to debut the new model there.
