Sierra Adventure pt 3, Sept 27th

Alright, here's the plan as it stands now (Aug 14)

Meet in Coulterville, CA at 9am. Ride down to Bear Valley via Hwy 49 (aka "The Little Dragon"), then turn around to ride it again. Then take Hwy 49 north to Hwy 120 and cruise through Yosemite Park, over Tioga Pass, and down to Hwy 395. *Note: normall there is a $10 entry fee, however September 27 (National Public Lands Day), entrance fees will be waived!!

Have lunch in Lee Vining and as a group decide on the second leg.

140 miles, approx 3 and a half hours.

Leg two options (mileage and time per Google, so.. )

Return to Hwy 49 back over 120 - 100 miles, 2 and a half hours.

Head north on Hwy 395 to Hwy 104 (Sonora Pass) to Sonora on Hwy 49 - 122 miles, 2 hours, 20 minutes

Head further north on Hwy 395 to Hwy 89 (Monitor Pass) then to Hwy 4 (Ebbetts Pass) to Angels Camp on Hwy 49 - 158 miles, 3 hours 50 minutes.

I wanna go riding! Who wants to go?

@antiant mentioned a trip to the CA version of the Dragon. I haven't played in the mountains much at all (like Mosquito Ridge, or Downieville, or heck even just Hwy 49).

So, Californians, Nevadans, anyone else in the area, let's figure out a trip! What do you want to do?

I'm busy Aug 21-24, but otherwise my weekends are fairly open. If the best date is within the next month, I want to be cautious of technical riding due to my wrist (I am babying it).

So come one, when and where? Let's go!

Sounds good! I work on the weekends (Saturdays, no Sundays) and everyone is retiring on me, lol, so I'm like the only one left. Not sure how coverage is going to work at my job and if/when I'll be available. I definitely won't be available August 19th - 31st. Maybe we can do it on Labor Day September 1st because that's a holiday for me and maybe everyone else? I've heard great things about Hwy 49 (Little Dragon, etc), but I've never been in that area, so I'm game and open for anything.

P.S. - I'm a noob, never been on a group ride yet.

I'm guessing that this will end up being a group of folks who've never ridden together so calm speeds, fair amount of rest stops, and a fun day. I don't mind leading, I just need a trustworthy sweeper than can get in touch with me if someone has a problem.

Where was little dragon again? If this is all Hwy 49 maybe just an easy cruise north to Downieville then back south again might be in the cards.

Just saw that.

Google is being a PITA so how's this for a route? Sorry the map is routed backwards because it was refusing to use Hwy 4 for some reason.

Bear Valley / Coulterville (whatever Google wants to cooperate) north on 49 then east through Yosemite either on 120 through Groveland or the really twisty road Google is suggesting (J20 on the above map), then north on 395 to Bridgeport where the group can decide between 108/Sonora Pass or 4/Ebbetts Pass (with a bonus of Monitor Pass) and end in Angels Camp.

Just under 300 miles, and before I threw Google out the window, it guessed under 7 hours, with you guys from California ending up somewhat close to "home".

This is the long version, more than willing to make the route fit what everyone wants to do.

Easy pace, as I said. Goal is to have fun.

If avoiding the period of time while your wrist is healing, I might be available the weekend of sept. 27 but don't wait up for me. I'm not really free for weekend rides much anymore

Sounds good! I've always wanted to cross the other side of Yosemite through Tioga Pass, but I haven't been able to do that yet. The only thing that does concern me is the El Portal fire that's going on in Yosemite. So far, they haven't said anything about closing Tioga Pass or any other roads.

I wouldn't mind the 27th, I think I can get that off, it's enough advance notice for my job.

We can set this ride for September? Gives enough time to plan, etc.

I'm only anticipating being free then but that is entirely subject to change and I can't do anything about it unfortunately. If the stars align though, I'll be happy to hang out with everyone! I haven't ridden for fun in a long time...

Google guesstimates the long version (Hwy 4/Ebbetts Pass) to be around 7 hours and 270 odd miles.

We can easily shorten that using either Hwy 108/Sonora Pass or simply going to Lee Vining for lunch and then back over Tioga.

When we start is the big question that I don't know the answer to. According to the web, Yosemite Park has the following times for Sept 27th - Twi: 6:24am, Sunrise: 6:50am, Sunset: 6:49pm, Twi: 7:15pm. We are looking at about a 12 hour daylight window to ride in.

If Google is right, we can start at 9 and be done by 4, leaving about three hours of sunlight to head home in. I don't think we should start much later than that since our ride time may lengthen due to traffic or unfamiliar roads.

I agree Teri, plus for me and (I'm sure others) it will take about 2 hours to get to the meeting location itself, which adds more time. It's kind of hard to meet in the middle, considering everyone's location. Lee Vining sounds good for lunch.

We can also start or meet at Angels Camp or Sonora, then stop at Lee Vining for lunch, go through Yosemite to Coulterville/Mariposa, maybe stop there, then everyone can take off home from there? I don't know, but that's just another suggestion. Whatever makes it easy for people.

Personally, I like the idea of starting the furthest away and working my way closer, but since I am not sure where everyone else is, not sure which is "closer" to the rest.

How about leaving the second leg open? If we start from the Little Dragon, ride to Lee Vining for lunch (FYI, Yosemite does charge an entrance fee to get through Hwy 120), then we can decide to just go back via 120, come over 108, or be bold and go back over 4.

If we start in Angels Camp or Sonora (IMHO 4 is more difficult than 104, but other riders feel the opposite - either way, both are moderately technical and require paying attention and good riding skills), then head over to Lee Vining, the choice is easy to come back over via Tioga/120.

Ah, makes sense, but yeah it's kind of hard to figure out how close everyone is. Starting at the Little Dragon would be fine and I don't mind leaving the second leg open. I'm also aware of the gate fee's at Yosemite, I use to have a pass. I'm looking forward to riding through Yosemite, I love that place.

I can't commit, as I work on an on-call basis, but if available I'm up for it. If I can't make the entire trip, I may be able to ride along with someone coming from points west of the route for awhile, or suggest the best routes to get there with minimum traffic, good road surfaces etc. Personally, I don't care much for this section of Hwy 49. I think it's the worse part of the entire highway. The lanes are narrow, shear cliffs without guard rails, road debris, not that scenic, and it gets it's share of head-in-the-butt Yosemite tourist traffic. I suggest NO aggressive or spirited riding in this area. If any road warrants a cautious and slow pace, this is definately it.

Thanks for the heads up, if its bad we can do it once, say we've been there and chalk it up to "Yeah we've done that road."

Apparently California has a few Bear Valley's, so Google is quite confused on which one i am looking for. How does meeting in Coulterville sound? That way we can ride this segment twice together, once south then back north.

Hopefully the current fire will be out by the end of September and no new ones crop up between now and then.

Sweet!!

(*googles*)

Wheee almost five hours for me to get there. Yep, will definitely be looking into a room down there for the night. Or maybe a pull off and just bring my little tent. Trouble is, being right at the entrance of Yosemite room rates are stupid.

Or a night at the Iron Butt Motel. I can do that too.

I've got CalFire's map up and only showing active fires in northern California. Nothing down around Yosemite.

However, We're still having lightning storms on this side of the mountains. Any word over there on fire conditions? Beyond just living in a tinderbox until next winter?

I am dumb. I forgot I have concert tickets for that night. I'm all for ending on the earlier side if I manage to come.

Would lunch in Lee Vining still work for you? We can do that and then either separate or just head back over 120. Or if you need to leave sooner, we could ride to Tioga and separate there.

If you can make it that is.

I don't think it should post a problem, but if someone else decides they want a slightly shorter ride, I wouldn't be against it

I have to check my calendar. I'd be riding from the southern bit of the state, so we'll see. I feel like I may have prior commitments though. Argh.

I'll put this on my calendar and barring the unexpected I'll be there for the ride. @NevadaWolf , thanks for organizing this!

Consider I'll be riding from south of Los Angeles (if I make it), I may be down to do a shorter version of the ride with you, since I'll probably have to head back down after anyway. Then again, sometimes I'm a ridiculous ball of energy.

Thanks, you two. It's looking like a fun little group of people I've wanted to meet for a while as well, so I hope I can make it, too.

I edited the first post to show the mileage and expected times for Coulterville to Lee Vining, and then the three options that I can see to get back over the mountain.

Also open to suggestions for Leg 2 if anyone sees anything better/different.

WAIT WAIT WAIT @tfkrocks is awesome!! September 27 is National Public Lands Day, entry fees to the park are waived!!

School and vacations for most people should be weeded out by that time, so let's hope it's not crowded. I have been there on a day where the fee's were waived and it was a zoo.
