'06 noise while upshifting
Last night after a quick takeoff at a light i noticed that every time i upshifted there was this little grinding noise, almost like little (teeth?) are grinding together?? its not a hard grinding, it just still doesnt sound good, especially since it wasnt there before.
Ive tried shifting different ways and it only happens when i preload the shifter and then shift quickly. i am using the clutch. i was wondering if it's the friction plates? motorcycle tranny's arent like cars so im a little lost. does anyone know anything that i could check or look at to see whats up? |

is the oil level at the correct height in the sight glass? what oil (brand/weight) did you use? is your clutch cable free play adjusted correctly?

yes it's at the right amount in the sight glass. i use valvoline 10w-40 motorcycle preformance oil. i checked the free play about 1,000 mi ago, it was ok. do you think it has changed?

oil level was checked with the bike vertical and not on it's sidestand, correct?
clutch freeplay can always change... just check it to be sure (easy enough to do), though if you're having problems shifting even w/o using the clutch, I doubt that's the cause of the grinding you're hearing. how many miles on the bike? has the clutch ever been changed? is your drive chain cleaned, lubed and set to the correct freeplay? BTW, why are you preloading the shifter before you shift? If it only grinds when you preload it, don't do that! |

yes, it was vertical i actually went out to check it just now.
hmm.. yeah i think ill go check it in a minute. bike's got 15k on it. and no the clutch hasnt ever been changed. drive chain is all good, i put lube everyother day when i get home. but now that i think about it, the noise im hearing is kinda coming from the left side. any possibility of the front sprocket slipping or something? Ben, would you characterize what you're hearing as grinding or clunking? if clunking, does this help?
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Why_is_...27clunky%27%3F the countershaft sprocket on the pregens have 2 bolts that hold the sprocket to the shift/output shaft. check to see if they are loose. they do not need to be really tight, just snug is sufficient. btw, welcome to ninjette. its more of a grinding noise.
the infamous transmission "clunk" im familiar with. when i first got this bike i thougt i was shifting completly wrong, but i read up some and found out thats just how they are. lol but that link was informative, thanks. |

honestly idk what it was, but it went away???
i did perfect my clutch cable tension tho, i get lightning fast shifts now but thanks kkim. |

cool... you may want to take it easy on the transmission, though. Throughout the years, I've learned to treat the transmission in all my vehicles like a delicate, precision piece of machinery, that it is. I have never had a transmission problem with any of my vehicles, motorcycles and cars included.
