bike won't shift down to lower gears at stops

Hi all, first time poster here. I just got my first bike two weeks ago and I'm loving it.
However I just started having a little problem. It happens maybe 50% of the time. Whenever I stop at the traffic lights, the shifter won't engage and I cannot get to lower gears unless I move the bike a little bit with my foot.

Any ideas?

Welcome. My first idea is the clutch is not disengaging completely.

Well, if it didn't want to go into neutral while stopped, I'd say the clutch is dragging as Racer x said, but if you're trying to actually shift to lower gears while stopped, that's normal... you need to be rolling for that to be a smooth job. Get your downshifting done before coming to a complete stop.

That's totally normal. A cycle trans is not like an auto trans, and needs to be moving to change gears.

As TJ noted, downshift as you are slowing not all at once when stopped. That way you are in the proper gear if you need to accelerate.

Read through this section for more info and ideas - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Clutch_%26_Transmission

As TJ also noted, just letting the clutch out until you hear it click (then back in), will allow it to change gears when stopped.

Jay (NinjaDog) don't feel bad, it's an easy mistake to make. Occasionally something odd happens and I'll get stopped a couple gears above neutral. I just have to let out the clutch and creep forward while clicking the gears down until I'm back to 1st, no big deal.

Happy riding!

Yep, downshift while you slow down. I know mine doesn't like to shift down a bunch of gears at once, and another Ninja rider I met was having the same problem.
