I need a second key for my 2006 Ninja 250

So, my bike I bought third hand only has one key. It is the type cut on both sides. The key is not new with sharp teeth, but works well in the ignition and locks. The two local Kawasaki dealers sell blank keys for 8-15.00 each, but can't cut two-sided keys. Is my only option to buy a blank key and then go to a local locksmith? The local hardware stores can't guarantee cutting two-sided keys either. If I get the number off the seat or helmet lovk, can locksmiths cut a new key from that number? Thanks. Frustrated!!

A real locksmith should be able to cut a key, if you get the code off the back of the helmet lock.

Quote:
What if I lose all my keys?

Well, hopefully you read this and did some preparation. There is a key code that comes with the keys on all new vehicles. If you do not have the code tag that should have come with the keys, take the time now to unlock the helmet lock, unscrew the one phillips head screw that holds it on, look on the back of it, and write down the number you find (usually ZXXXX) in a couple of good places, one of which is the inside cover of your owner's manual. It's much easier to take the helmet lock off when you have a key than it is to destroy it should you somehow wind up with no keys.

This is a picture of the backside of the lock assembly. The locating pin on the left fits into the frame, and the Phillips head screw seen on the right actually comes in from the other side of the assembly and secures the assembly to the frame. The screw is protected from tampering or removal from the bike by the sliding rod that you hang your helmet D-ring through when securing your helmet. The key code is in the whited-out area.

Also here's another link on key blanks
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/EX250F_key_blanks

Good luck.

I don't think a general locksmith would be able to cut a key from the kawi keycode, but a kawi dealer certainly can. Good wiki entry for the older keys here:

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/EX250F_key_blanks

Hillbilly Cycles in West Virginia (http://www.hillbillycycle.com/) used to be good for ordering keys if you had the keycode, but it's been a few years since I've needed one.

The code is a key code, not a kawasaki code, it corresponds to the depth of the cut.

I had our replacement keys cut at ace.

Interesting! I hadn't thought they were state secrets, but I did think that they were unique by manufacturer.

I am kind of wrong, it's a possibility that they need the "decoder" a book or cross reference of sorts, but locksmiths should have that. I had keys cut for my Virago at the locksmith, he called me back in an hour with a key.

verbotten1, so your local ace could cut a new double sided key just from the code? I don't think my local ace hardware has a computerized key machine.
And WHY did my local Kawasaki shop tell me if I wanted to order a new pre- cut key from the key code direct from kawasaki it would be about $80.00?????? That's insane!!!

No, ace cut me a key from an existing key.

I took my Kawi key to a local locksmith, he found the blank that worked best, cut it for me, and only charged me like $4 or something. It's been working flawlessly ever since. He even made me go test it in his driveway a bunch of times to make sure I was happy with how it worked in all my locks

yea, getting a replacement key from Kawi is a beech.

I just ordered key blanks for a pregen from here: http://keys4urride.com/

Guys at ACE could cut it if I had another key, but alas, I do not, so I'm trying to make my own with some lock picking instructions I've always wanted to try. Picking the gas cap BTW showed me that although the keys are double sided for ease of use (doesn't matter which way you put it in), they don't use double sided tumblers, so to pick the lock is pretty easy. Always learning something new.

I'll have to call some semi-local locksmiths and see if they can either duplicate my key or cut a new one from the helmet lock key code.

Ace cut a blank for me off the old bent original. They had me test it before paying. Worked better then the original.

Nothing, really. So many bike and car keys are or were double sided, I've had many many copies made.

My Ace does not have my key blank in stock. Not sure if they can get the Ilco equivalent oe not. I just don't want to pay $8.00+ for a key blank at Kawasaki, and then gave Ace mess up the cutting. Not that they would.

Lots of info in this thread: http://forums.ninja250.org/viewtopic...85a9e56b44f403

and here: http://forums.ninja250.org/viewtopic...=829253#829253

Here, too: http://forums.ninja250.org/viewtopic...ghlight=wafers

(There's some overlap in those threads!)

The keys are cut both sides, but only one side is used. It's only cut both sides so that the user doesn't have to think about which way the key needs to enter the lock. Companies that don't do this are IMHO lazy (I'm looking at you, GM!).

Almost every locksmith or hardware store should be able to copy your key, and you can buy keyblanks on amazon. The problem it the copies will be of the used key. If you want a new key you need one cut from the key code.

If a used key works well, a copy of that key should work well, too.

Werd. My old civic had a used key with a lot of mileage. Got a copy made off the spare (which spent its life in the kitchen drawer, not being used) and the copy was really rough.

Well, I took off the helmet lock to get a key code. I don't use the helmet lock anyway, and it turned out the screw was also loose. There are two sets of numbers on the helmet lock, each a string of five characters. One starts with an "S" and ensure in "HH", so I don't think that's the code. The other starts with "Z". I'm not sure which one it is.

The answer to your question is in the links I posted. To recap, the Z5XXX is the key code. The key cut code is a six digit number used by the locksmith to set up the key cutting machine to cut the depths of the notches. Kawasaki sold key code books that locksmiths used to look up the cutting code based on the Z code. The codes changed each year and were model-specific. Not all locksmiths bought the code books so you will need to call around to find one that did.

I also provided enough info in the links I posted for you to cut your own key if you are handy with a Dremel and have a dial or digital caliper. It's not that difficult and the key would likely be more accurate than a duplicate of your old worn key.

Just so anyone else reading knows, there are only theoretically 1,000 different key codes, Z5000 through Z5999. In reality there are less than 1,000 different keys because some combinations of key land depths aren't used, such as all notches being the same depth.

Well, I checked with local locksmiths, and neither of them had the right key! They both have the fancy key code cutter machine and said if I could get the keys and had my key code, no problem cutting new keys. I searched the internet and found a pack of 10 KA14 keys on Amazon. With shipping the keys are only a little over $10.00. Once the keys arrive and I get a couple cut I'll reply how I made out. I may start off taking one to Ace and see how they do copying my current key.

Since there're only four depth positions for each of the six notches, I can look at a picture of your key and tell you what the cut code would be. So could any competent locksmith for that matter.

So your saying that if I took in a used key to any competent locksmith they could look at it and cut a brand new version of the key? (Not a used copy)

Reminds me of that time the TSA posted photos of their master key set for TSA approved luggage locks.

It explains why the key I had made works smoother than the original.

Something to keep in mind is that when the original key has worn down a little from a "new" key, the cylinder itself has likely worn. Brand new keys cut from a code or keys that aren't replicated to the original's specifications may not work as well as the original itself.

Also here's another link on key blanks

Good luck.
thank you so much for this! You just saved me 130$ because I didn't have to have the lock reverse engineered. I bought a ninja 250r with no keys but I was able to pick the helmet lock, retrieve the code, and order 2 keys cut to code for $30 online.

Yes, they were mentioned earlier in this thread, too. http://keys4urride.com/. It took a while to figure out the key type I needed but then you give them the code and they'll cut the key to the code for 6$+-, all together 30$ for 2 with shipping.

They have a whole section on kawasaki key blanks and if you can't find your year/model just email them.

To keep everyone up to speed, I ordered 10 keys on Amazon- KA14 key blanks. The locksmith where I work said the local Tru Value Hardware had a key cutter with a good set of jaws that would probably hold the KA14 key. I went in, the guy looked at my original key and said he could probably cut new keys.. I had him cut two. He didn't even charge me because I supplied the blanks! Brought them home to try in the bike and they work perfect. Even tried turning the keys and inserting them both directions. Perfect keys.

Any updates? How did the keys work? Which blank did you get?
