Car troubles

So, after riding my Ninja for the past 14 months; my car has been neglected a bit. Wondering if any of you bike gearheads are also car gear heads.

Car: 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan, 2.2L, Automatic transmission with manual everything else, 140,000 miles

Some of the following issues were minorly present before she sat for a year, some of which have greatly elevated since then. If I didn't list something, it's probably in good condition.

Front driver side strut makes noise
Cracked windshield (About 1/3 of windshield, most of the crack diagonally upward)
Burning oil smell, possibly just leftover from fixed oil leak
Flasher relay is dead, have to manually 'blink' signals
Interior lights/dash fades in and out when idling, driving, playing music, all the time.
Some paint scratches in bumper from scraping against a concrete pillar in parking garage. And general pain flaking on bumper
Rotors are warped
Pulsing brakes, because of the rotors
General maintenance
Turning the steering wheel makes... groaning noises.
Battery doesn't hold a charge for more than a day, two year old battery

Anyone know what price range I am looking at to get my car fixed up?
Is it worth fixing her up if I have my Ninja? Emphasis on starving college student.

I don't particularly have the means to repair her, primarily wondering what I might be able to sell her for. Just an insurance and tab drain sitting in my driveway.

Posts: A lot.
  • Strut could be a simple bushing that needs a little grease.
  • Crack may not matter...unless it is in the field of view. If it obstructs your vision, it will need to be replaced before next inspection.
  • Burning oil smell is most likely oil on your exhaust manifold. Depends on where the leak was that was fixed. Most likely cause: Valve cover or head gasket
  • Flasher is a cheap part that costs maybe $5, easy to replace. Relay is normally in the fuse box under the dash
  • Fading lights: possibly a voltage regulator or alternator problem. These days, they are mainly one in the same. Could also be the battery.
  • Paint: meh, as long as nothing is rusting. If it worries you, fix it with a rattle can
  • Warped rotors? get them machined
  • Read above
  • definitely change the oil/filter
  • Check your power steering fluid levels
  • Could be the alternator once again, a possible short drawing power out of it, or the battery itself.

So yeah. Strut could be cheap or expensive, unable to tell over the net. Windshield, honestly not sure. If the oil leak is truly fixed, no cost there. Flasher relay: <$10. Interior lights/dash fading: **go to a parts store, they can check your battery/alternator right then and there (new alt goes for around $300 typically, battery, depends on what you get). Rotors: if you can pull them yourself, that is the cheapest way. If not, then it gets a bit more costly. At least $100 probably. Oil change: depends on the oil/filter you use and who you take it to. Power steering: if fluid top off fixes it, probably <$15. Battery not holding charge, see **.

I am not saying those are your issues, just listing possibilities.

If you've been able to let it sit for 14 months, you probably don't need it... Get rid of it...

If you need a car once in a while, it might be cheaper for you to rent one or borrow one from family, if you can.

If you really need on, you'll be able to find one decent for less that it will cost you fixing it...

And if you fix it or change it, be sure to drive it at least once a month, to at least keep thing "rust free" and the battery charged...
