AMA Pro roadracing Road Atlanta Saturday results—Hayes penalized, Young awarded win

AMA Pro roadracing results from Saturday's American Superbike and Daytona SportBike races at Road AtlantaWisconsin native Blake Young garnered his first AMA Superbike victory while resting in his motor home post-race, after AMA Pro Racing officials ended up penalizing initial race winner Josh Hayes for a jump-start during the first portion of the red-flag-interrupted National Guard American Superbike race. The confusion resulted from the timing of the race stoppage; Hayes was serving his stop-and-go penalty when the race was halted, but because rules stipulate gridding the field according the previous lap, AMA Pro Racing officials put Hayes on pole position for the restart. After a post-race protest was filed by Young’s Yoshimura Suzuki team, AMA Pro Racing determined that Hayes had not returned to a racetrack under green flag conditions, and penalized the Yamaha rider 21.4 seconds (determined as an average time to serve a stop-and-go penalty). This dropped him down to sixth place, and moved the remaining five riders up one spot, giving Young the win, with teammate Tommy Hayden and National Guard Suzuki’s Jake Zemke filling out the podium, and Pat Clark Motorsports Yamaha’s Ben Bostrom and M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s John Hopkins following.
