My rear shock blew

Well recently I blew the rear shock on my 2004 ninja 250. I ordered a new generation rear shock to drop in and I definitely want to upgrade the front. I noticed the front forks from the new gen are 37mm and the pregen are 36mm. Would these still fit?

No, you'd need new upper and lower triples at the very least, and I don't know if those would fit. Someone will be along shortly with all the information, I'm sure.

An easier solution is to replace the fork springs with heavier ones, and changing the fork oil to a heavier weight.

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_..._suspension%3F

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Which_t...ion_upgrade%3F

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Front_suspension_upgrades

I've done the fork springs, I had an extra set from an EX500, so I cut them down, and then replaced the fork oil with 15wt, along with the rear shock from a ZX600 this set-up works for me.

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Installing_a_ZX600_shock

IMHO upgrading the suspension on the Ninjette is the best upgrade one can do, and is a must do upgrade, and is the best bang for the buck.

Something else to consider is doing the fork seals and dust covers if there's any doubt about then. Nothing is more annoying than doing all that work, to only have them leak soon after, only to have to tear it apart again.

Finally is you have the extra cash laying around($180.00) get the Ricor INTIMINATOR

http://store.ricorshocks.com/product...20-1001nin.htm

Several members here have them and swear by them.

A Ninjette with the suspension dialed in, and a skilled rider will dominate the twisties .

@Ghostt: I think the OP may already have bought a new gen shock. Assuming he wants to use what he has; will a new gen shock just drop into a pre gen or are there changes that need to be made if it's at all possible?

Having said that; I agree with all your above suggestions

Good point, I read into it as he also wanted to do something about the forks, by swapping out the PreGen with NewGen. Not a bad option, but a cheaper easier upgrade would be to upgrade the PreGen forks themselves, springs, oil, INTIMINATOR, etc.....

So new gen & pre gen shocks are interchangeable without machining or whatever?

I have not done the swap yet, but from everything I have read, yes.

Yes. I have used both a new-gen 250 and 300 rear shock in my pre-gen. It just bolts in. And, it only costs around $35 USD.

And the EX500 shock is basically the same dimensions as the PreGen shock too (but the spring is about a 1/3 softer on the 500, and it has a preload adjuster). The NewGen/300 shock might be a tad longer, but it's in "lift the rear because I want to make it turn a little quicker" range, not "screw up all my suspension geometry" range.

I haven't seen much data posted for rear spring rate numbers, with nearly nothing on the PreGen. Some online calculators indicate that the NewGen/300 spring is too stiff for a lot of people - ideal for ~215lb. Whatever you end up with, check your sag to make sure the spring is in the right range for your weight. Too soft means too much movement, and it'll feel squishy. Too stiff means the wheel won't absorb bumps properly and will skip. Either one is bad, just in different ways.

And yes, definitely upgrade the fork springs. They're much softer than the rear spring to begin with, so going to the 18% stiffer rear will make that imbalance even worse.

Thank you for the replies! Yes I have picked up a 2008+ rear shock and felt the front needed updating as well. I come from the world of automotive racing and upgrading the rear without touching the front usually results in excessive oversteering(not sure of the same applies here) so I definitely wanted to upgrade the fronts along with the rears. Thank you all for the suggestions

Great points. Yes, I am close to that 215 lb. range, and it is NOT too stiff for me.

So ended up with a 300 ninja shock instead. Should still fit. Now going to order the ricor intiminators as well as some .70kg front fork springs. Should be a nice bike after all that. Not to mention once my woodcraft lowered bars come in

FYI, the NewGen/300 have .65kg/mm fork springs. If you can find some cheap, "pretty close" might be a better value than buying "exactly right" for full price. Also, the Intiminators are designed to use a lot of damping, so they can tolerate a softer spring better too.

I'm not trying to discourage you from spending money on the right parts, just pointing out an option that might be nearly as good for a lot less.

The front fork springs will fit? Aren't they 1mm thicker. If they fit, I found a set for 10 dollars which works for me. Lol

Thanks for that! I'll be getting the rear shock in tonight and the fronts should arrive by the end of the week. Super excited, I'll get to shake the new setup down at bear mountain this weekend!

Installed the shock today as well as the woodcraft lowered risers. I can't believe the difference the shock made! Bike actually feels like it wants to go around turns. I can't wait for the front springs to arrive.

Your in for a pleasant surprise when you get the front done, and get it all dialed in.

I've always said the best bang for the buck is doing the suspension, add some new better tires, and you'll be amazed on how well it will do.

Are there any more $10 sets available? I could use 2 or 3 sets... eBay didn't turn up any deals today, but I am in no rush.

I too thought that they wouldnt fit. It is good to know that there are other inexpensive options.

It was the only set I've seen for sale on eBay. Here they are in all their glory!

After a few weeks of installing the ninja 300 springs with and 15w motul fork oil, the bike feels great. Really feels like a much newer bike. Now need to pick up a battery, this one died on me 2 days ago
