Wide rear tire

I have a 130/90-16 on the back of my bike. I believe that this is as wide as you can go on the pre-gen.
Has anyone put a wider tire on the back and if so how close is it to the swing arm? Mine is very close with the 130. Pics of how it fits would be nice as well.
Thanks in advance.

Rick... I need to eventually replace my rear Pirelli... of course it took a screw the 1st month I had it. Plugged the offending hole for now. Have you found more road contact with the wider tire and steadier? The Pirelli stock size still seems somewhat slender on the freeway and the odd "pavement crack" grabs it and you feel the slip/slide deal. I want to upgrade the size on the 2009. I'm thinkin the 140 they don't seem to be suffering from "rim pinch" as some say it would.

addy126...When I switched from the stock tires to the slightly wider Pirelli Sport Demons the contact patch was not measurably larger but the tire was much firmer and stickier. The Pirellis made the bike handle much better in the twisties.
From what I have heard from new-gen riders that have intalled 140 and 150 tires, they say the bike handles well with the wider tires.
For me going with wider tires is more for looks than performance.
To answer the person that is going to ask "why do you want to go wider?" My answer is that if it can be done than why not? Mods are what make our bikes unique and a personal statement.

Do you have a pic from the rear of the 130/90 sport demon? I saw a guy with a pregen with a WIDE ASS tire on the back.. looked pretty cool.. even on the stock wheel... but IMO it wasnt safe....

Rick... on my 2007 pregen I upgraded the stock tires to the Pirelli sp demon. There was very noticeable positive difference in the handling for grip and rolling on many different road surfaces. Not so much on the new gen's and the Pirelli sp. demons. I'm thinkin its basically the tire profile... thus a little wider on front and back should give me the contact patch and grippiness I'm more comfortable with. Looks, sure it helps esthetically I agree, but I also want that performance that is not quite there yet. Oh and have a great upcoming weekend!!! I've been remiss in telling you this lately

well your new gen wheel was probably intended for a radial...i'll see if i can find the info i'd read before on the bias ply vs. radial issue...i remember it was about the with of the rim being the issue..a radial needs a wider rim vs what a pre gen has

nope the rim still would't be wide enough

I do run a bias ply 120 currently though

Hey Alex think this may be a more tech type topic?

The pregen's factory rear tire is 130/80-16. This is according to the owner's manual and every source i can find. Where is the size listed as 120/80?

I have grown to like my Pirelli Sport Demon 130/90-16 and will stick with that tire.

I've run the 120/80, 130/80 and 130/90. Going from the 130/80 to 120/80 felt a little strange but I think it handles great. A 2.5" rear rim like the 250 wasn't designed for wider tires. You are only ADDING rotating weight (and in the worst place too no less) to an already anemic bike! Heard good things about the Sport Demons but even near the rev limiter in 6th leaned over dicing it up with buddies on 600s and 1000s the MT75 did me fine, stock suspension but I'm light.
