!HELP! Adjusting Valves issues
I started to begin adjusting valves (checking valve lash) yesterday. As I was removing the 8 cam journal bolts (8mm) I stripped one
*it's not terribly stripped but the socket just spirals off as I begin to turn. Any ideas how I can get it out? Anyone with a book know torqued these bolts are supposed to be? How bout the valve cover grommet bolts as well (for when I put everything back together). Thanks in advance! |

I think my problem was that I used an extension going over the frame (wasn't as careful as I should have been I guess). big lesson learned. I hate how this stupid little bolt has made my valve adjusting come to a complete halt.
anyways, Thank you for the numbers! |

Maybe salvage it, clean it up with a file or something. Use it on an outside cap?
Or did you not get it loose? |

from my friends 500 book, the actual name for it is the "camshaft bearing cap bolt" however, which one of those names is the same one as this "camshaft bearing cap bolt" ?
edit: and yes, I was not able to get it loose at all sadly. |

Use Vicegrips to take it out. Clamp them down hard on the bold. If you need more torque to turn the bolt, put a pipe on the end of the vicegrips.

I've been trying with the Vicegrip since this bolt cannot be salvaged anymore, the problem is that this bolt was much softer than I had expected.

Might take a gander @ Craftsman's Bolt-out sockets. Link is for a 10pc set but I know they sell 'em individually too. Not cheap, but...

Crap, noticed that in your first post now. If it's all F'd up from vice grips. I would probably grind the top off, get the cap off/cam out. Then use the vice grips/pliers on the stud. |
