250 Racing pays off!

I hope you don't mind me asking, but this post--particularly your thread title--actually got me wondering about this. When you say "pays off," do you mean you've passed the break-even point in racing where you make more money racing 250s than you've invested in it?
I'd always sort of thought that 250 racing was sort of the trials to step up to the larger classes where making money is actually a possibilty--a way cut losses for everybody before moving up, since even the winners riding 250 class street-based (not GP, 2-stroke, etc) bikes probably have a lot more money invested in bikes, track time, etc, than the payouts in that class.
Or can you actually make money in the 250 class, starting without sponsorships, if you're good enough?

Or did you just mean that the pride and joy of getting sponsorship and recognition for your achievements in the sport have made the whole journey worthwhile? Because that's an equally valid (probably moreso) viewpoint.

It's a little of both. I should definitely break even this year (barring something catastrophic, haha), and may actually profit a little.

Between sponsors and contingencies, it's definitely possible to break even with racing, epecially considering the (relatively) cheap initial investment in racing a 250. It's mostly about marketing yourself to sponsors, then marketing your sponsors.

The thing to remember is that they're not giving you things/paying you to race; they're compensating you for advertising their product and/or brand.
