Rattle Can Remake...HELP!
Has anyone had experience spray painting their fairings? All of my plastics are a different color. I bought the bike wrecked and found spare parts from this site and locally. Well, I just got all the fairings fitted on nice and snug, I'm happy with how it looks, just not the color. On the headlight fairing I need to do some bondo work but that will be no issue. I just wanted to know if anyone has done this and how it turned out.
What kind of spray paint did you use? What kind should I used to get the best results? How should I prepare the gas tank? What kind of sandpaper should I used on the fairings? Help! Thanks! Andy |

Keep in mind that the hardest part of painting, is the prep work, prep work is the key to excellent results.
Also the fairings are made of ABS plastic, so keep that in mind when searching.

Use a 2-part ("2K") clear coat over whatever paint you choose. It has much better resistance to gas spills than standard spray clear. Especailly important if you are painting a tank.
For a DIY 1st time painter, I would choose a solid color over a metallic in order to get the best results. DO NOT strip the original paint from the parts if it's in good condition - just sand it. That gives you a better base than stripping to bare metal (or plastic) and priming with spray can primer. If you have to strip decals that are cleared-over, don't strip any areas that you don't have to. Prime any bare metal. For any painting or priming, the surface must be dull and absolutely clean. Sand until the surface is dull with 400 grit sandpaper and water after cleaning any grease/oil/bugs from the surface. Use a Scotchbrite pad to get in tight corners. Paint will not stick well to any glossy, or dirty, surface. |
