Are all BMW owners asshats? Or just the majority of them?

BMW stereotype: operates a vehicle like a douchebag. But there's a reason for stereotypes, right? Maybe? This time it was a BMW rider. F800GT.

Story:

I met this guy a few months ago at a gas station. We chit chatted and he took down my number. He calls me saying he is going to meet his buddies down by the shore (Jersey shore) and wanted to know if I'm free to ride down and chill with them (2 hour ride).

First 90 degree weekend. The beach sounded like fun, so I agreed. We meet up and I told him to lead.

This is how he rode the entire way.

1. He hogs the left lane and tailgates cars while we're going 65-70mph. He leaves about 2 car lengths of space.

Link to original page on YouTube.

2 . He tailgates on the left lane, then passes on the right, then brake checks a car. This way, the car moves out of my way. But now the car is pissed off and guess who they take it out on? Yup, you guessed it....the rider in the back (me). I told him before the ride that once I hit 70mph, my passing power is weak. I have to strategically plan my passes. I told him that if he passes, just keep going. I'll catch up eventually. But nope, he insists on passing and brake checking them so they would move over for me.

Link to original page on YouTube.

3. So, he did it to this Honda Pilot. This is the 3rd time within an hour. As he passed them, I purposely dropped back. I didn't want to play this game. The Honda was between us. And the Honda was tailgating him. After a few minutes, traffic started to back up and he decided he was going to have a few words with the driver by stopping in the middle of the left lane (you can see his hand gestures through the windshield at the start of the video). I pretended I was oblivious and didn't know what was going on.

Link to original page on YouTube.

4. He texts while he's riding. I kid you not! I guess that's why they make fingerless gloves.

Link to original page on YouTube.

Bonus: when he stops behind a car at a red light, he leaves about 6" of space between him and the bumper in front of him.

What's scary is that this is the way he rides. It wasn't a one or two time occurrence. This is his riding style. Needless to say, I didn't stay long at the beach after I met his "boys".

I would have made a right turn after the first brake check. Guys like that are bigger idiots than loud pipes.

F800GS owner.

I was just kidding. The stereotype is mainly for BMW car drivers. I know a few long distance BMW riders with crazy bike handling skills as well.

Anecdotally; I have to agree regarding many BMW car owners. Both in and out of their cars!

Oy. Anecdotally, yeah, we joke about having to be a jerk before they'll let you buy a BMW (car). That's funny because we had a BMW convertible for a while, and we don't drive like that. But yeah, you see someone in an expensive car, they're probably gonna do something selfish, stupid, rude, and/or dangerous.

But really. I have personally never met a person who drives a BMW that was anything close to a decent human being. But I'm sure my experience is drastic and that there are decent human beings that drive BMW's. I'm sure Bill Gates owns one, and if anyone should have acquired the wealth that he has, it should've been him. He's a hugely good person.

Poor guy was desperately trying to ride away from the humbleness of a Kawasaki 250 cc !!!

"It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company." - George Washington

"I may climb perhaps to no great heights, but I will climb alone." - Cyrano de Bergerac

"With fools, there is no companionship. Rather than to live with men who are selfish, vain, quarrelsome, and obstinate, let a man walk alone." - Buddha

In my experience, the position of the feet on the pegs tells more about a rider than the brand of the machine.

It's not BMW owners, it's NJ people.

Nope, not my problem. This was the first (and last) time I'll be riding with him. Didn't want to give him advice or pointers on his riding when I'm riding a N00b machine. One of the first question he asked me when we first met was "so when are you going to upgrade and get a bigger bike?"

Ummm....this is my 5th bike. I chose a small displacement on purpose.

this is called a god complex. has no concept that the other car could simply run into him and keep going and kill him within seconds. nobody else's opinion or desires matter, only his. this is also the reason he wears no gear. because he believes he can't be touched. looking at how he rides its painfully obvious he has no idea what he is doing.

that being said, i get ****ing pissed when some idiot is driving 65 in the FAST lane of a 3 or 4 lane highway with NOBODY AHEAD for like 30 car lengths. the #1 lane isn't for cruising because you're lazy. you stay in the slow lane, and then move left to pass people. that's why the put signs up every quarter mile saying "STAY RIGHT" and "SLOWER TRAFFIC STAY RIGHT" i wouldn't be doing this on a bike, but in a car i absolutely would be a full-on asshole to someone asleep in the #1 lane.

Whoever suggested it's a Jersey thing might be on to something

If I were going on stereotypes, the T-shirt/Jeans/Sneakers/Short gloves combo would've raised more alarms than the BMW, even if you mentioned the bike in jest. Most of the BMW riders I encounter are on adventure bikes and covered head to toe in textile gear, much of it blaze yellow. They tend to ride cautiously in my part of the world.

On the subject of BMW car owners, the ones I've known personally have all been good people. The worst among them gets the title because he's overpaid and generally worthless as a coworker/teammate...but he's a very nice guy.

My friends who ride bmw whether boxers , k bikes, F bikes or the various S1000 are good guys and good riders. It's the person not the marque. I have a 328 and I think it's a good car. Doesn't make me drive any different or act any different.

I'm a BMW owner (a real douchey one too, K1200 &#128518 and I think it comes down to the individual. We could all say the same of Harley owners or you name the brand. I don't really ride with anyone anymore, I just don't trust other riders. I prefer to be the lone wolf, me and my bike against the cagers!
