Check your six!

I assume most of you know what that means:

Watch your ass!

Regularly check your mirrors when you are stopping, or coming to a stop. There are a lot of idiots in cages who are not watching out for motorcycles when they are coming to a stop.

If you are at a light with no car behind you, flash your brake light as you see them approach. Keep your bike in gear. This is so you can move up/over if it appears that the car isn't coming to a stop.

I've had two friends recently rear-ended while sitting stopped at a light. Unfortunately, one of them was fatal.

Be safe out there.

When pulling up behind a car at an intersection, move off to one side or the other before you stop.

That way, should the car approaching from behind you not see you, you have an escape route either to the gap between lanes or to the shoulder to jump into. The main reason to keep your bike in gear and your hands and feet ready to react.

I see bikes pull up right behind a car and if they get rear ended, they are going straight into the back of the car in front with no where to go.

@Worldtraveller, Lane, I am sorry to hear about your friend.

Good to remember!
Modulating brake lights are a pretty cool safety mod.

Dang dude, thats crazy. I didn't know someone can get hit that bad, or is it that the car pushes them into the intersection?

My condolences.

Thanks for that.

In this case, they think the impact snapped his neck and pretty much killed him instantly.

News story.

And yeah, never stop right in the middle of the lane.

If you are doing things right, you are more likely to be rear ended then having a "close call" by someone turning in front of you.

You should be checking your mirrors regularly while riding and stopped. There have been plenty of times I have been able to move out of someone's way when they were going too fast to stop, while I was driving/riding at highway speeds.
