Asheville is absolutely amazing though. I'd go back in a heartbeat and I'm hoping it works out that I can go back with some friends in spring for a biking trip.

Almost as good as the whir of the straight cut counterbalancer gears on a triumph, with some of that triple roar thrown in for good measure.

New plan for the OP: Head to triumph and get those guys to bring back the Daytona.

hey everyone, thanks so much for chiming in. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions! $40,000 is not enough to live a nice life in DC, but I could scrape by. I'm honestly not sure how anyone goes about getting a job for more than $40,000 right out of college. I'm willing to bet my shop would pay me that if I were to go back! (a distinct possibility)

I'm too tired from riding dirtbikes all weekend to read through everything right now but I definitely will get to it! in the meantime I welcome more suggestions and thoughts about the industry's job needs

The purpose of the post was to point out how foolish some people are when selecting clothing to wear riding a motorcycle. Uh, get it?

To answer your original question, I advise conducting informational interviews. Asking this forum is great, but doing so in person, out in "the field" might yield better results. There's a phrase known as "the known candidate", which you can't do ( in my opinion ) over the web.

As you speak with people in the local motorcycle shops, they get to know you. If something isn't available now, they might keep you in mind if something arises down the road. They can also lead to other outlets to consider.

Just a thought... Good luck!

Good thought. I think they used to call it "networking". A big plus in a job hunt. It goes a long way in the process of "selling yourself".

Yeah, a big part of getting to your dream-job is to work up from inside the company. Very, very few companies hire fresh graduates for great positions. The requirements for those jobs depends upon the results and deliverables of your prior achievements. So you'll want to just get your foot in the door in an entry-level position, prove yourself and work your way up. A lot of that has to do with schmoozing the staff and building allies. The higher you go, the more and more people you need to know and more and more of it depends upon how much they like you. It can take 5, 10, 20-years to do.

About 15-yrs ago, around the 1st dot.com boom, one of my friends got promoted up to a VP-level position at 3COM. Afterwards, he sent out over 200 thank-you letters. It took that many people on his side vouching for him to get that job.

They still do call it networking.

I don't have a dream job. I did my dream job and it wasn't so dreamy. I just want to do something interesting and have it pay for food and a place to sleep, and my 9 motorcycles.... ha.

Opening a shop is a HUGE undertaking. Has anyone here actually done that? It requires a LOT of money, planning, risk, loans, long term financial burden, not to mention the cost of operating and employing people and I don't even know enough about bikes to do it... I live in an area where hardly anyone rides for 4 months out of the year... My two years working at a motorcycle shop is not enough experience to go open my own.

Wise words.

I own a shop, and work on motorcycle and auto components mostly, but it's not a motorcycle repair shop or anything like that. I started it from scratch with money I saved for a long time, and I worked many years in a similar (though not the same) industry.

It can be tough. So many places for the money to go out, and it never seems as many places for it to come in.

Being a business owner has advantages, but they can't be measured in dollars. If work slows down, I can work on my projects - but it doesn't pay the bills.

When it works it can work well, but there will be times when it doesn't.

I'm not sure people have an understanding of the process of opening and operating your own shop from scratch. I definitely am nowhere near a position in life where I would be able to do that. I think working at the shop gave me some insight into how ill prepared I would be to open my own. Besides, I can go back and work there!

It definitely requires some pre-requisites! I had to work part-time during school to save up money. When I had enough to live on for a year without income, I started my own consulting business. Then used money from that to open my shop.

In popular motorcycling areas there are lots of different business possibilities. There are places that rent motorcycles, motels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, campgrounds, repair shops, dealers, photographers (like killboy.com) souvenir shops, and others I can't think of at the moment. Some take big investments and some don't. But I'd never try to talk someone into starting a business unless that person really wants to start a business.

Yeah. Gotta have the drive, motivation, and passion to offset the pain & suffering!

The FLAP outfit is a unique motorcycle operation. Works well out here since there's good weather and trackdays year-round at all tracks.

* Sales? Read a story of a women, frustrated by a bad experience buying a car due to her gender, became a salesperson herself. She was successful, particularly selling to other woman. And the dealership had the sense to see the value as well. She did have it tough though as it is still a male dominated profession.

* HR Position with a motorcycle manufacturer or large dealership? Might require some specialized training/certification.

* Sports psychology? Do professional motorcycle race teams hire sports psychologists? Don't know myself. Might require a graduate degree.

* Possible Targets
# Motorcycle manufacturers
# Dealerships
# Aftermarket part manufacturers (clothing and/or parts)
# Aftermarket part vendors
# Professional race teams

I wouldn't mind selling certain bikes, but I'm honestly an awful salesperson. I'm sure I could learn the skills but it doesn't come naturally. I interviewed for a sales job a few years ago at Honda of Rockville (yes I'm calling them out) and their pay was $800 a month - or, umm, FIVE dollars an hour for 40 hrs a week. Plus 12% of the profit that the dealership made off each sale (usually $800-1000 off each vehicle). No thanks...

Aftermarket parts companies would be awesome. I saw a sales position for Vortex in Salt Lake City for 40k plus commission. I'll keep looking. Also interested in event planning and behind-the-scenes stuff for events that the AMA puts on; I know people travel with motorcycle shows like the IMS, which could be interesting too... thanks for the brainstorming.. keep em coming..

I did think about having a motorcycle shop/cafe.. like eat food and pay us more money while you wait for us to fix your bikes...

Have you considered applying for a job at Revzilla? They are located on the other end of PA from you.

How about this idea for your own shop? What about searching out an established "Mom and Pop" shop, where the owner is close to retirement and/or selling? It is already established, and most of the time, they will stay on during a transition period. They may evenprovide the financing for you!

I thought about Revzilla but I DO NOT want to live in Philly.

35-ish miles, and in some a very nice area that's close to the southern NJ beaches and roadside stands with the best corn in the country. In fact, get a job at the track!

I thought about Revzilla but I DO NOT want to live in Philly.
And you DO NOT want to live in New Jersey. It's the gateway to hell itself.

Southern coastal NJ, as I was hinting at above, is a very pleasant place to live. I spent many summers at Ocean City, and that whole area is beautiful, from Cape May to Atlantic City, and the farm land inland from there.

Great place to live if you want to grow cranberrys. Nice place for a ride too. You forget that it wasn't too long ago motorcycles were not allowed to use the New Jersey Turnpike and the cops in New Jersey are as crooked as a dog's hind leg. New Jersey State troopers planting cocaine in an elderly couples car trunk and busting them? As Bob Dylan said "In Jersey anything's legal, as long as you don't get caught."

Sorry, 17 years in that hell hole was enough for me.

Flanders, just about 2 miles south of Route 80 off Route 206. Commuted to Xerox Corp. in Morris Plains and then Princeton.

By the way, North West New Jersey is nice country also.
