2011 MotoGP Jerez race report and results—Lorenzo wins wet crashfest

Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo stayed upright to win a crash-laden MotoGP race at Jerez Spain, Rossi takes out Stoner in crashWith riders dropping out of the race all around him in a rainy MotoGP race at the Jerez circuit in Spain, Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo was thanking Spanish monarchy in the post-race interviews. “The King of Spain said to me that he would bring me good luck after our meeting last February in Madrid, he was right!” exclaimed a happy Lorenzo. After two full days of nice weather, the Jerez de la Frontera region was hit with rain on Sunday that played havoc with pre-race predictions. After getting the holeshot and leading the first few laps, pre-race favorite Casey Stoner was biding his time and making sure he would have some tire for the end of the race. When a charging Marco Simoncelli barged his way past heading into the Dry Sack curve at the end of the back straight on lap five, Stoner was content to let the Italian by. But the Australian’s race went pear-shaped on the next lap when Valentino Rossi lost the front end attempting a pass on the inside of first turn on lap seven, taking out Stoner in the process.

Adding to Stoner’s frustration was that when both riders picked themselves up to try and get back in the race, a crowd of trackside marshals all but ignored Stoner in their rush to help Rossi pick his Ducati up off the ground and get rolling. Stoner was unable to restart his Honda, while Rossi continued on to finish fifth. Honda Racing boss Livio Suppo was livid, but he wasn’t the only one angry at what he saw as preferential treatment of Rossi.
