CVMA 2012 Final Round Race Report!

The final race weekend of my 2012 CVMA season was possibly the best racing that has been had all season. I’d like to take a moment to thank each and every one of my sponsors for helping me out this season in their different ways, and for helping me to improve not only as a rider, but to assist the entire racing community as a whole. Slim at Nexx helmets has brought Poly Moto Engineering onboard to be the 2013 CVMA and Willow Springs trackside representatives, and I look forward to supporting their sponsored racers, and promote safer riding through top-notch gear. Matt at Hotbodies Racing has always been enthusiastic about the entire 250 SoCal racing grid and has been very supportive this whole year, as well as Max at Cycle Gear Racing who continues to not only work to help racers, he also gets on track and takes amazing photos as well. I look forward to working with everyone next year!

The weekend at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway was uncharacteristically cold, windy, and had the largest turnout of 250 racers that had yet been seen. It was a change of pace from the usual weekend, without the usual hectic unloading and getting suited up Saturday morning, since we had arrived Friday morning to assist some new trackday riders, and set up the Nexx booth. I had the chance to ride an Aprilia RS125 for a session as well as practice at the end of the day on a borrowed R6 that I would race the rest of the weekend, and felt much more comfortable than previously jumping onto different bikes and pushing them around the track. We met up with Tony Baker (MRA president) and his crew of 250s that afternoon and set them up, as well as Brian Bartlow’s Feel Like a Pro team of fast guys from AFM, and welcomed them with a BBQ in the bone-chilling desert wind that evening in appreciation for the effort that they took in making the long haul out.

1.jpg

Saturday morning during practice I had to run a conservative practice pace on the ninja 250 since my rear tire was nearly the entire season old, and far beyond the wear bars, so I focused instead on getting comfortable and adapting to how the R6 felt. Qualifying ended with me in 7th place on the 250 with a 2:05 lap time and Josh Fogle on pole with a 2:03 lap time. I knew this would be a tough weekend since I had never broken below 2:05s. Qualifying for SuperSport Open was better, taking a 5th place start behind some of the local AMA fast guys. Racing the R6 in SuperSport Open was uneventful and with a small grid composed of professional racers, I was mostly on my own for both days, and ran a personal best of 1:56:8, which will also easily drop as I get the bike set up for my weight and adapt a more big bike riding style.

2.jpg

Saturday 250 SuperSport began on row 3 was an unusual sight, but it was amazing to see that we had a 32-bike grid, and the excitement from all the racers was hardly restrained. Ari Henning, who I battled with at AFM earlier in the year was just ahead of me, and Darren Simms to the right. The green flag dropped and we thundered to the first corner, where I passed Tony Baker and a few others but ended up in 6th place at the end of the first corner. We continued onto the next few corners with no gaps forming anywhere, then on the 4th corner leading into the bowl, Ari and Jon Hong made contact right in front of me, leading Hong to get into a tank slapper and highside on corner exit directly in front of me, luckily without serious injury, but that led to a red-flag and a race restart. The restart was exactly the same outcome out of turn one, and throughout the race, though I was pushing 100%, I was not able to make up time on anyone ahead of me, and the gap from me to the end of the next group grew considerably. I set a new personal best of 2:05:4 and 6th place, but was far off the pace and began to experience mid corner and corner exit oscillations and rear wheel slide, and unable to match the pace of the front runners who had dropped into the 2:03s. Ultra Lightweight Shootout ended up in a similar way, with a 7th place finish and yet more rear tire slide.

3.jpg

Sunday 250 Ultralightweight shootout saw Fogle set a new lap record at a 2:01:1, and my times slip farther down as the rear tire began to shed its last ounces of rubber. Logan Hanks and I battled for a good portion of the race since he was experiencing front tire wear, and a mistake by another racer led us to have a 3-way battle to the finish, with yet another unfortunate 7th place finish. The last race of the weekend I was determined to just have fun and focus on corner entry and midcorner speed since I was unable to get on the gas as early as I would like due to the rear tire, ultimately leading to dragging my elbow on the curbing mid-corner, something I would not have thought possible on a 250. After nearly highsiding several times during the race on the gas, I ended up setting a new personal record at 2:04:3, which could easily drop on new tires.

4.jpg

Overall, I ended up tied with Darren Sims for 2nd place in the 250 SuperSport championship with 144 points, the tie breaker being that I had won more races, so he was bumped down to 3rd place. Ultra Lightweight Shootout I ended up in 6th place due to missing so many races because of mechanical issues, which I hope will not be an issue now that we’re halfway through the 2012-2013 winter season, with 4 rounds left to make up championship points. To be competitive with the new bar that has been set, engine work will be done to squeeze a few extra HP out of the little 250, and I will be switching to the Pirelli Moto3 slick tires for just a little extra added grip. The largest change will need to be with the rider, with an exercise and diet program and some off-season dirtbike training, I hope to be more competitve than ever next season. Next year brings more challenges with the addition of the Willow Springs racing series, and I hope to bring on more sponsors to support the Poly Moto Engineering Team and return to dominate the West Coast 250 racing grid!

I'm lucky I got to follow you for a lap this weekend. Hopefully I TOO can squeeze some horses out of my motor and loose some muscle weight.

While I love this idea, do you really think a single silent film frame will be able to fit enough text for anywhere I might be featured?
